Summary

An achingly funny story about how to be your own hero when life pulls the rug out from under your feet. From the author of the bestselling You Had me at Hello.

Delia Moss isn't quite sure where she went wrong. When she proposed and discovered her boyfriend was sleeping with someone else - she thought it was her fault. When she realised life would never be the same again - she thought it was her fault. And when he wanted her back like nothing had changed - Delia started to wonder if perhaps she was not to blame...

From Newcastle to London and back again, with dodgy jobs, eccentric bosses, and annoyingly handsome journalists thrown in, Delia must find out where her old self went - and if she can ever get her back.

ok-ish

Whilst the overarching storyline had potential, Delia really grated on me, fish flopping one way then another. Her character hugely grew throughout the story, then seemed to do a full u-turn at the end which wasn't really inkeeping.

The narrator also had some very odd inflections on words, especially if she was trying to emulate a Northener.

Brilliant, I couldn't stop listening

Loved this story, it was funny, very sad in one part, and actually cried. Brilliant characters, and it's actually set partly in the North of England with regional accents. Loved it. The narration was also brilliant, just wanted to keep listening. A must to have. 😁😁

A perfect love story

I really really enjoyed this story. Something different but of course a happy ending too. Definitely recommend a listen.

Very good

I loved listening to this story. It's character driven and there are plenty of great characters to follow not least the main one, Delia, who works at Newcastle council. Delia proposes to her boyfriend of 10 years at the start of the story and that sets off a chain of events that change her life. This book is easy to listen to and follow and I soon became engaged with it. If you like romantic comedy then I recommend this book.

Thoroughly enjoyable

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was able to identify with the main character having been in similar situation myself. I wasn't expecting a great story as the book was on sale and I only bought it because I was about to board a plane and wanted a cheap listen but I was more than pleasantly surprised. I loved the way the author makes reference to recent news activities (Peru two) and her use of modern, descriptive language makes you feel like you belong IN the story.

Utterly gripping😊

Loved everything about this book: the story, the dialogue, the real characters, the thoughts, feelings and doubts they expressed and until the end you are thinking, feeling and doubting with them. The story is so unpredictable and until the end you can't stop listening. There are some great ideas here about love and falling in love and infidelity and all the hurt and change that comes with it, but the book is never judgemental or too moral, just realistic and complex. I loved it, like all books by this fabulous author I only discoverd 2 weeks ago. It was also wonderfully read out, that is an art form in itself😊😍🥰

A slow burner and then WOW

A fab book....get passed the first 2 chapters and then what a brilliant book. The narration was good though a few iffy accents...but really good with a few hidden life messages....absolutely recommend

Finny, sad, romantic... this book has everything!

I listened to this on audible and really enjoyed it. Delia splits from her long term partner Paul when she finds out he has been having an affair. After 10 years together, Delia asks him to marry her and is met by a less than enthusiastic response followed by a text meant for his mistress! Delia is also miserable at work and finally leaves when she gets into a tangle with pesky Internet troll known only as peshawar naan. She leaves to stay with a friend in London and gets a whole new career... and a whole lot more than she bargained for.

I really liked Delia. She's a lovely character and seems to lack the toughness to deal with the things that happen to her.... but we know its in there. There is a lot of sadness in this book. We spend alot of time dwelling on the demise of the relationship and on the death of a pet, but there is enough humour to balance out this sadness.

This book is very similar to others ive read by this author- the format is familiar but it works! The narration is good - i enjoyed listening.

Tickled pink

I started listening to this and foolishly did not pay attention to it properly! Thought I was not that into it but tried to give it a fair hearing. Clearly it has stored awake the crazy in my unconsciousness and forced the persistence button. And I am so pleased it did. Love the humour the characters, the metaphors. I alway love Mhairis books they lead you in have characters you root for but unfortunately they are so good your kinda left feeling bereft that your time with you new found friend is over. Cannot wait for the next book, I have loved all of your books. One criticism is you just do not write fast enough for my liking!

Best Mhairi McFarlane book so far

There were some genuinely tense moments of intrigue in this book, as well as utter heartbreak and uplifting romance. I loved it and can't wait for the next!

The narrator was great, very good accents.
