Unless God helps us, there is no hope, Captain Morris yelled over the roar of the storm. Hudson Taylor had to agree. Indeed the Dumfries might sink this very day and he would never live to see the shores of China, a land whose people he was certain God had called him to. Hudson survived his perilous maiden voyage to his beloved China. With his heart set in determined obedience to God, Hudson overcame persecution and almost overwhelming personal losses to bring God's truth to the "ripe harvest fields" of China.

Story
Eric's (1902-1945) refusal earlier that week to run on Sunday in the Olympic 100-meter race had stunned the world. Now his incredible victory in the 400-meter race further strengthened his believe in God's promise, "He who honors Me, I will honor." Years later, Eric Liddell would be tested far beyond mere physical ability as a missionary to China. His character, perseverance, and endurance are a challenging example for all who would obey the call to bring the gospel to the nations.
Summary
A fellow missionary had said, "When you get to China, all the scum of your nature will rise to the top." It surely had, mused Belle. The food, the fleas, the filth, the exhausting mountain paths, and so many other transitions to missionary life had tested her. But Belle had stayed at her post, and she was so glad that she had.
As a 14-year-old intent on living a "modern" life, the last thing Isobel Kuhn (1901-1957) wanted to grow up to be was a missionary. But as it turned out, this young agnostic's life was redirected - from crisis and doubt to hope and strength.
Convinced that God wanted her to preach the gospel as a China inland missionary, Isobel bravely served among the Lisu people in remote mountainous regions of China and Thailand. After 20 years of ministry Isobel returned to the United States, writing stirring stories of faith and inspiring generations of listeners.
This best-selling, missionary biography series - Christian Heroes: Then & Now - chronicles the exciting, challenging, and deeply touching true stories of ordinary men and women whose trust in God accomplished extraordinary exploits for His kingdom and glory.

The real life of a missionary, way back when!
I love Isobel Kuhn's life as a missionary. She sounds really real. She talks about not being able to bathe, having fleas and lice, chickens eating the scraps under the table at inns she stayed at, livestock sharing the community bed....shall I go on. It doesn't sound like a life of luxury in way, shape or form. Oh and this book includes small glimpses of marital disagreements. In short, this book specifically gives me hope as a Christian. Plus, it's so amazing how she reaches the Lisu people in Asia. She had to wait almost 10 years to finally reach her goal of reaching the Lisu. That's another thing that caught my ear is that she had to wait. What, wait!! In our day of instant gratification, there should be no waiting....ha, ha! All in all, a very good read and very enlightening.

Beautifully written & narrated!
I consider it a huge compliment to regard this book, “Isobel Kuhn: On The Roof Of The World,“ as a worthy companion of Isobel Kuhn’s books. As a devoted bookworm for many decades, it is notable to single out Isobel’s book, “In The Arena,“ which I read MANY years ago, as being so memorable that it remains one of my top favorite books throughout all these years. So, (in comparison), I didn’t have high expectations of this Audible book... but what a pleasant surprise!
