Summary

Die kleine Plätterin und der Baron verbringen einen glücklichen Sommer zusammen, obwohl beiden klar ist, dass ihre Verbindung niemals gesellschaftliche Anerkennung finden kann. Dass Fontane das Liebesverhältnis der beiden so unbefangen schilderte, war für viele Zeitgenossen skandalös. Doch gleichzeitig wurde der Roman, der an die Notwendigkeit erinnert, der Menschlichkeit wieder Geltung zu verschaffen, ein großer Erfolg.
