Summary

At the age of 50, Eddie Brocklesby decided to run her first half marathon. Until that point, she'd done little running, and her exercise regime consisted of little more than chauffeuring her children to their own sports clubs.

In common with so many people, any interest she'd shown in sport in her childhood had diminished as her adult life progressed, with spare time becoming ever more limited in the face of work and family commitments. But the half marathon was the first of what was to become a hugely impressive trajectory of sporting accolades and successes.

After that event, and following the loss of her husband of 30 years to cancer, she completed a marathon. Now nearly 74, the past 20 years have seen her take part in marathons, triathlons and Ironman races across the globe, and she has accrued many medals and awards.

In Irongran, Eddie looks back on her life and explains just how she's managed to develop the energy to match the enthusiasm she's always had for an active lifestyle. She shares the difficulties she's experienced in her sporting endeavours and explains how she's managed to overcome them.

Eddie is passionate about the health and well-being of our ageing population and provides up-to-date research about why keeping active in later years is so important, along with guidance about how to remain full of life in your later years.

Ruined by woeful narration

I pretty much never write reviews, but felt compelled to do so by the fact that this book has been significantly spoiled by the dreadful narration. She sounded bored by what she was reading, it was not fluent and the pronunciation was awful. A real shame as read by the right person this should have been excellent.

The best book I've read on Triathlon.

Awesome blueprint for a 1st timer like me and more experienced athletes. I learnt so much and it schooled and talked me through so many lessons learnt

Just wow

what an amazing and inspiring woman Eddie is. I hope I can sustain my own fitness into my old age and be that older competitor that inspires others.

Just amazing.

Inspiration

Inspirational and insightful. The narration is quite annoying though. As if the narrator was slightly off guard throughout

An incredible woman

Eddie's story is absolutely amazing - from starting running at age 50 she has run marathons, competed in triathlons, cycled across America and represented Team GB in her age group. All that while working as a social worker and parent.
The only thing I found a bit grating was the narrators mispronunciations, but I guess many people will gloss over that.

Great story - shame about the narration

Really fabulous and inspiring story - hope I have half the energy Eddie has in my 70s. I stuck with it because it was so interesting and relatable but it was a struggle because of the dreadful narration. It’s possibly the worst i have come across. It was like she really couldn’t be bothered and just wanted to rush through - very monotone. Awful mispronunciations too - ath-er-lete particularly grated.

Fantastic and inspiring

Thank you Eddie, at 56 I’m now planning my training from zero to the Chippenham half marathon in September 2019.

(the teeth grindingly awful narration and mispronunciations of the narrator are better ignored)!

Inspiring

You will want to move, walk, run, swim or/ and cycle after hearing this. Some timing in the reading is odd but you soon get used to it.
