There is a secret, hidden within a body, burning within the flames, which will change it all. A man’s charred corpse is found in the latest of a string of arson attacks in the French city of Orléans. His is the first death. An extremist group claim responsibility but their whereabouts cannot be found. Police inspector Capitaine Inès Picaut and her team must track them down before more people die. Their only clue? The name of a woman who has been dead for over five hundred years: Joan of Arc. She is one of the great enigmas of history – a young woman who came from nowhere to lead the armies of France to victory against England. And who died the same fiery death as the man whose body has just been discovered. As more fires rage in Orléans and the death toll mounts, Picaut must look to the past and the secrets which lie buried there to unravel the mysteries of the present. As the clock counts down, she must challenge some fundamental truths to save those closest to her . . . Into the Fire is a breathtaking collision of past and present, a brilliant race-against-time thriller combined with an immaculately woven historical narrative. In it, bestselling author Manda Scott demonstrates why she is one of the most exciting, innovative and highly accomplished storytellers of our age.©2015 Manda Scott (P)2019 Bolinda Publishing Crime Fiction Historical Mystery Thriller & Suspense Kurgu Gerilim Suç

Having read the novel a while ago, I revisited Into The Fire to distract me from the building work around me.

Listening rather than reading is a completely different experience and juxtaposition of the two performers highlights the intertwined threads of the story. I loved it and, t got me through the drilling, sawing and general aural mayhem of a refit!

Highly recommended

The dual storyline were synergistic and gripping. Superb characterisations, research, and performances. I now want to find out more about Joan of Arc.
This is my favourite audiobook novel to date.
Loved it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, with two stories skilfully interwoven and two excellent narrators telling the parallel stories. Wholeheartedly recommend.

Cracking read

Manda Scott once again proves to be one of the best, most intelligent and beautiful writers today. Into the fire was second to none (apart from treachery of spies which has too much kick to it to match!) captain pico is the only main character I’ve read or watched in years who isn’t self absorbed and incredibly boring, which I think is an accolade in itself!

I am perplexed! And looking forward to reading other reviews. I found jumping between two, although interlinked stories, created a disjointed listen! I loved the characters in the depiction of the fate of the maid, vivid and powerful, but then obscured by the rude return to the modern day detective as the chapters jumped about in a discordant way. I wish the two tales had been sequential, and the more recent events a coherent reflection on the past? I’m curious as to why the telling of the maid’s story, remains a positive experience for me, whereas the other felt trite and over engineered?

Perplexing!
