About this listen

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to chuck it all in and do something completely different? One night over a few too many beers, Sam Manicom decided to ride a motorcycle the length of Africa. A mad idea? Or a world of opportunity opening up? There was just one obstacle; Sam didn’t know how to ride a motorcycle, and if he was going to make it through the Sahara before the months of intense summer heat hit, he had just 3 months to learn and get across Europe to Egypt. Into Africa is a story that takes you exploring an incredible continent. The phrase ‘Every day an Adventure’ was coined for this 22,000 mile journey.

Travelling southwards through fourteen African countries between Cairo and Cape Town, this is the story of an enlightening, yet demanding journey. Full of the mishaps, dust, heat and the thrill of overlanding, you’ll sweat with him, but you’ll also laugh as he describes the highs that Africa and its people place in front of him. Some countries were torn by civil war, with the politics of others placing challenges in his way. Bribery and corruption hit with additional tests, but Sam soon found that these aspects did not drown out the joy and the beauty of the land. He quickly finds that though Africa is as challenging a continent to travel as he’d expected, the ever-changing scenery, the historical surprises and the humour of the people are the most powerful aspects. His motorcycle gives him the freedom to explore that he’d hoped for, and listeners will soon find that this is a book filled with the magic of motorcycle travel. Taking side turnings and dirt roads he gets off the beaten track through some of the world’s most dramatic landscapes, to places where little has changed for hundreds of years.

Into Africa is the 1st book in the series of 4 books.

8 years around the world. 6 continents. 2 wheels.

Sam has been described as 'One of the foremost and most readable adventure motorcyclists.' We hope you enjoy this audiobook.

I'm not a reader at all and signed up to audible after meeting sam at the Overland event 2025 I found him a very interesting chap and now really enjoying this adventure two thumbs up from me

The writing and narration, for me, are missing some of the passion and emotion of similar m/c adventures. It's very calmly written and told. I met Sam recently at the 2025 ABR festival, very nice chap and I guess the book style is very much in keeping with the man I met. After our brief chat I decided to try this book. I did enjoy it and I will continue with the series. I especially like all the political context of the countries' at a significant point in their history.

Wow - Sam sure puts his guardian angel to the test! In this gripping first instalment of his four part journey across the world, Sam reaches way out of his comfort zone by embarking on a motorcycle trip from London to Cape Town. The only glitch? He hasn’t ridden a motorcycle before, let alone across the Sahara. Sam tells this vivid tale in his usual warm, evocative style as he takes the listener on the handlebars with him on a true journey of discovery and (mis)adventure. One of the best storytellers out there. I loved this and have listened to this more than once over the years. Sam reads this himself, which makes this even better - it’s like he’s sharing the story with you directly over a campfire. A real treat.

Vivid storytelling at its best (by a man with more than 9 lives!)

Having read the book some years ago, I thought I'd tey the audio book version.

What a treat!

Hearing him tell the story adds a wonderful depth to the narrative, as you hear the emotion attached to the words.

This book has transformed my morning commute into a drive I looked forward to.

Now onto his second book, and looking forward to another 11 hours of travel.

Sam's voice adds such a depth to his story.

I met Sam and his motorbike at a festival in the summer of 2025.

I’m not much of a reader so didn’t get very far with the written book but decided to give the audio version a try.
I’m very glad I did!
For a first time author, Sam really has nailed the art of storytelling and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to his vivid recollections and descriptions of events gone by.

Feels like I was there!
