On October 6, 1973, Ted Simon knew there was no going back. He loaded up his 500cc Triumph Tiger in the pouring rain and said good-bye to London. Over four years he rode 64,000 miles round the world. Breakdowns, revolutions, war, a spell in prison, and a Californian commune were all part of his experience, which was colored variously by utter despair and unimaginable joy. He was treated as a spy, a god, a welcome stranger and a curiosity

Since the Stone Age, the "walkabout" has been an aboriginal rite of passage. It is when adolescent boys wander aimlessly into the bush on a journey with no particular destination. During this time, they make the spiritual transition from boy to man. It's a time for self-assessment and deep thought, when he can learn about himself without the influence of his elders, friends, or family. It's a physical and psychological journey.

“Well, now I’m committed,” he thought to himself after telling a national TV game show audience that he wanted to ride a motorcycle to Mongolia with his winnings. He felt the fear that commitment always induced in him; he was hoping they might have edited that bit out. Commitments are something he tried to get as far away from as possible, the only other constants in his life being twenty-five years of financial prudence, travel and motorcycle obsession. So there he was, committed to going very, very far on a motorcycle with his meager prize money. Consequently, he spent a winter on eBay and a spring in the garage preparing his $1000 KLR 650 for an uncertain life on the road.

From London to New York, Ewan and Charley chased their shadows through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia, across the Pacific to Alaska, then down through Canada and America. But as the miles slipped beneath the tyres of their big BMWs, their troubles started. Exhaustion, injury and accidents tested their strength. Treacherous roads, unpredictable weather and turbulent politics challenged their stamina. They were chased by paparazzi in Kazakhstan, courted by men with very large guns in the Ukraine, hassled by the police, and given bulls' testicles for supper by Mongolian nomads.

A Biker's Life is the dramatic, humorous and candid memoir of one of the most recognisable names in motorcycling. Henry Cole's passion for motorbikes began when, at the age of eight, he was first introduced to a 'man cave'. His great-uncle Redbeard's corrugated iron shed was 'stuffed to the gills with old motorbikes' which Henry helped rebuild and ride. Since then, Henry's life can be charted through the bikes and journeys he has been on....

Why do we travel, what are we looking for, and will we recognize it if we find it? With the author’s 50th birthday looming, there seemed a need for something significant to happen. Not seeing an expiry date on his birth certificate made it hard to gauge when to have a mid-life crisis, but he’d almost definitely left it too late.

Just short of 3,000 miles long, the Congo River is the eighth longest in the world and the deepest river in the world, with a flow rate second only to the Amazon. Along the way, Phil encountered numerous waterfalls, huge rapids, man-eating crocodiles, hippos, aggressive snakes...

For the first time in my life I felt that death was a possibility; a stupid, pointless, lonely death on the aptly named Mondulkiri Death Highway. The Ho Chi Minh Trail is one of the greatest feats of military engineering in history. But since the end of the Vietnam War much of this vast transport network has been reclaimed by jungle, while remaining sections are littered with a deadly legacy of unexploded bombs. For Antonia, the chance to explore the Trail before it was lost forever was a personal challenge she couldn’t ignore - yet at times it would be a terrifying journey.

Summary
A liberating motorcycle journey through Africa with descriptions of the amazing people and places, the joy of big skies and the open road, and the sometimes harrowing events that would shape destiny.
Into Africa tells the story of a novice motorcyclist who takes on the challenge of riding the length of the continent just because, 'it seemed like a great idea’. Sam Manicom had only planned to take a temporary break from his successful retail career, but the one-year ride was so life-changing that he continued adventuring around the world for another seven years, covering 55 countries and 200,000 miles. Sam had no idea how liberating motorcycle travel would be. Revelling in a new-found freedom without timetables or routines, he became fascinated by his ability to explore side roads at a whim and reach remote parts of the continent that many travellers never find. Though Africa is just 5,000 miles from top to toe, Sam explored over 22,000 miles on every kind of road imaginable.
Narrated by Sam, ride with him as he describes Africa's amazing people and places, the joy of big skies and the open road, and the sometimes harrowing events that would shape his destiny. This is a genuine tale of the unexpected.

A mad choice leads to a brilliant adventure!
Would you listen to Into Africa again? Why?
Definitely, I have read the book and was pleased to hear it in Sam ' s own words.
What other book might you compare Into Africa to, and why?
I don't generally read travel books, they aren't my thing so can only be compared to Sam ' s other works... of which Under Asian Skies is the only one available on audio book yet.... I seriously encourage him to publish the others in audio format.
What about Sam Manicom’s performance did you like?
It is very personal and makes you feel like you are with him... His written work does this too... but hearing his voice makes it work even better.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
As a biker myself I have to laugh at some of the rookie mistakes I remember making myself... but in Sam ' s case he did it on a.mad adventure for a rookie to take on. RESPECT!
I believe his insight into culture is also important as there are many misconceptions in the western world that he puts right.
Any additional comments?
Sam is a brilliant story teller who makes you feel like you are travelling with him. The fact he narrates his own books makes it more personal.
While this is about a man riding his motorcycle the bike itself is only the vehicle. .. bit he metaphorically and literally and allows for the adventure.
This book is great for both people who love bikes as well as those who have never been near one.

A real motorcycle adventure
What did you like most about Into Africa?
I listened to this book whilst on my own motorcycle adventure, riding across Canada on dirt roads. I was constantly nodding in agreement with the experiences Sam was writing about.
What does Sam Manicom bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Reading a book can be rather abstract, you never know whether the author is stretching the truth. By reading the book himself, feel a real connection to his experiences on the road.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Sam talks about having an guardian angel watching over him and how even some of the worst events resulted in unexpected experiences. This resonated very strong with my own experiences on the road.
Any additional comments?
I would recommend this as essential material for anyone considering an adventure... or any armchair adventurers that wants to get a real feel of life on the road.

Having spent over 5 years in Africa working at various U. S. Embassies, this audio book stuck a heart felt cord with me. Sam's descriptive abilities puts you right into the adventure and I can vouch for his accuracy. This story is not about motorcycles, but shows what the real Africa is like, which can only be experienced by motorcycle. Read or hear this book. You will be enlightened.

Living a Dream
Would you consider the audio edition of Into Africa to be better than the print version?
I very much enjoyed the print version. The audio version which is in fact narrated by the author gave me the feel of a friend telling me a story of far off travels and the good and bad that can be experienced on such a journey.
What other book might you compare Into Africa to and why?
Ted Simon's Jupiter's Travels is similar in that it is adventure travel by motorcycle.
Have you listened to any of Sam Manicom’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first and I thought is was fantastic.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, this would be a great way to spend a relaxing day. I really like the way the narration gives a bit of a pause (musically) between chapters. It gave me a feel for the cultural adventure which lay ahead.
Any additional comments?
For anyone who has ever considered dropping everything and traveling the world. This book will give you the feel and flavor for such an adventure and the reality of what such an adventure could entail.

An exceptional vicarious adventure
Into Africa is a brilliant tale told by the author himself. The sense of adventure is sharpened by hearing it told by the same individual who experienced it. You can sense how the trip effected him on a personal level, as I'm sure it would have effected virtually all of us. The crackling sound of a campfire would have made you believe you were there, with him, hearing the stories first hand.
Exceptional descriptions paint a picture of these strange and exotic locations. The listener feels themselves being transformed by the adventure, and comes away with a new perspective on this remarkable continent. I truly enjoyed the audio format of this great book. For those who have not been able to travel far and wide, sit back and enjoy taking part in a fantastic adventure to another world.
Well done Mr Manicom!

Captivating
Most captivating Audible listen to date. Immediately started Under Asian Skies as soon as it ended. I'm sure I will continue until I finish all of Sam's work!
