Summary

#1 New York Times Bestseller

Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friend’s family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed “homicidal adventurer,” Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits, to live with intensity. Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit.

Chyna is a survivor, toughened by a lifelong struggle for safety and self-respect. Now she will be tested as never before. At first her sole aim is to get out alive - until, by chance, she learns the identity of Vess’s next intended victim, a faraway innocent only she can save. Driven by a newly discovered thirst for meaning beyond mere self-preservation, Chyna musters every inner resource she has to save an endangered girl...as moment by moment, the terrifying threat of Edgler Foreman Vess intensifies.

Not a bedtime book

I listen to books before I go to sleep at night but that wasn’t enough for this.
So fast paced and gripping, I was listening constantly. In the car, cooking meals, when I was “working”.
The best Dean Koontz for me so far

Extraordinary story.

What would you do if you were stuck with a serial killer in a vehicle? What would you do if he found you?
Griping story from beginning until the end. What a brilliant idea for a book! Psychological thriller at it’s best.
I just love Dean Koontz’s imagination and the beautiful way he describes people, places and emotions almost as if he was writing a poem.
I think that narration was very good. The main character was a female and in rather impossible situation. Frankie did her justice presenting a variety of emotions going through her head.

Meh

Being a lifelong S King fan, I have been trying to give more of a variety of horror writers a chance. I've real some very inspiring work lately, though most of it has been the work of newer writers on the scene. So I thought I'd go ahead and finally give a Dean Koontz novel a try. Though this was a thorough story and suspenseful at various times, it confirmed for me that his work just isn't, stylistically, my thing. Also I was not a very big fan of the narration and didn't particularly like the narrator's odd or sloppy pronunciation at times, like dropping the second d in words like 'didn't'. That unnerved me for some reason, though it probably sounds pedantic. Anyway, wrapping it up, I'd say it's not really a bad or un-scary work, it's just that, again, the author's style isn't particularly riveting to me and the way he initially sets up his women characters feels a bit too old fashioned, outdated perhaps.

Fantastic.❤️👍

I read this novel many years ago,and the audio version dosent deminish it,Frankie Corzo does a great job as narrator.Edgler Foreman Vess is a great Character, who you wouldnt want to run in to.I did read the first Odd Thomas novel, and while it wasnt my cup of tea,Mr Koontz more than makes up for it with this and other novels.I will deffinatly look for audio books narrated by Frankie Corzo.

Psychological Thriller

The author builds up the tension admirably and there are some great 'set pieces'. Some of the mundane information is rather stretched out though and it would be a better book if those sections were trimmed down a little.

Brilliant book completely spoiled by narrator!

This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. Very luckily for me I purchased the kindle book as well which meant that I didn’t have to listen to the absolutely worst narrator ever! Whoever hired this very boring monotone performer to read this book should be fired!

Dreadful Narration

There were a lot of great reviews when I chose this but I have no idea why. The storyline was ok but a bit slow and very predictable. The writing was like a dictionary full of similies. The narration was just dreadful. The narrator just ignored all the punctuation and instead read six words at a time followed by sickenly long pauses. Spend your credit somewhere else.
