Summary

This was no ordinary murder, for the victim was Frank Masters, millionaire and philanthropist. The case was bound to attract much public attention. But Inspector Ghote finds that his demands for evidence are met with nothing but lies and evasions.

A delightful find

This is the second of H. R. F. Keating’s, Inspector Ghote books that I have read and the author has drawn a character that I’m increasingly coming to admire. He is gentle, honest and thoughtful and he constantly examines his own thoughts and actions in his effort to act with integrity. The detective aspect of the story is well plotted, but it is the sights, sounds and especially the characters of Mumbai around him that bring an additional, fascinating complexity to the tale. The narration by Sam Dastor is outstanding. He brings every character’s personality to life. I would thoroughly recommend this audiobook, but to be introduced to Inspector Ghote, start with the first in the series, The Perfect Murder.

Little gem

This series is a real little gem. Narrative and reading both excellent. So pleased to have found it.

A time when refrigerators cost 1.000 Rps

Very good reading by S. Dastor. I love the Inspector Ghote series!
From a distant past in India, but still do very true in many parts

Inspector Ghote redeems himself

This is the second book in a 26 book police procedural series featuring Inspector Ghote, a Bombay police inspector. This book is much better than the first in the series, “The Perfect Murder.” The first book was just plain silly with stereotypes bouncing off the walls, goofy dialogue, and a totally contrived ending. This second book gets it right. Just the right dialogue, just the right pace, and an ending that makes sense. It’s still a little tongue in cheek at times, but, overall, it’s worth the read for a true mystery buff.

No Clouseau

It is difficult for me to square the customer rating of this book with my own opinion. All I can say is that Ghote is no Clouseau and certainly no Hamish Macbeth.
