Summary

The year is 1928. Kate Moore is looking for a way out of the poverty and violence of her childhood. When a chance encounter on a transatlantic ocean liner brings her face-to-face with the handsome heir to a Chicago fortune, she thinks she may have found her escape - as long as she can keep her past concealed.

After exchanging wedding vows, Kate quickly discovers that something isn't quite right with her husband - or her new family. As Mrs. Matthew Lemont, she must contend with her husband's disturbing past, his domineering mother, and his overly close sister. Isolated at Lakecrest, the sprawling, secluded Lemont estate, she searches desperately for clues to Matthew's terrors, which she suspects stem from the mysterious disappearance of his aunt years before. As Kate stumbles deeper into a maze of family secrets, she begins to question everyone's sanity - especially her own. But just how far will she go to break free of this family's twisted past?

The narrator's voice is so annoying!

The book is good but the narrator's voice and tone is extremely annoying to me. Her tone doesn't match what she's reading. It's so fake and bad. I am sorry, but I had to stop it.

Narration was affected

I found the narration of this book to be so cloying that I was unable to like any of the characters.

Dissatisfied

The audio was good. I just hated the story. The main character was deceptive and the overall story felt dark to me.

Narrator's voice is a trial I didn't pass

After restarting multiple times, I've thrown in the towel. The narrator's voice is...off somehow. It sounds very "put on" and I just can't focus on what she's saying because she sounds like she isn't speaking naturally. I have no idea if the story is any good, because I haven't been able to make it past chapter 1.

Surprise

The author draws you into a web of sympathy for Kate, living in an ugly house where the sympathetic web gets tighter after the revelation of every ugly family
secret. Kate has her own secrets. Her mother-in-law thinks she knows all of them but there's one...

Just Okay

Sadly, I struggled to get through this book. The premise was good, but the story seemed to drag on and the narration bored me.

Just Okay

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I wanted to like this book, but it was just okay. I didn't find the twists and turns surprising or all that interesting. The book as a whole was very predictable. I barely made it to the end.

OK, except the narrator

This story was intriguing but, very weak ending. And, the narrator was hard to listen to, very monotone. I did finish it but, had to speed it up.
