Story
The prophet Nehemiah’s cousin has been catapulted into the center of the Persian court - working long hours, rubbing elbows with royalty, and becoming the queen's favorite scribe. Not bad, for a woman living in a man's world. But a devastating past has left Sarah believing that God doesn't love her and that her achievements are the measure of her worth - a measure she can never quite live up to. Darius Pasargadae is accustomed to having his way.

Story
Striking beauty comes at a price. Rahab paid it when at the age of 15 she was sold into prostitution by the one man she loved and trusted—her father. With her keen mind and careful planning she turned heartache into success, achieving independence while still young. And she vowed never again to trust a man. Any man. God had other plans. Into the emotional turmoil of her world walked Salmone, a prominent leader of Judah, held in high esteem by all Israel.

Years ago, the day before Ellie moved from Georgia to California, she and her best friend, Nolan, sat beneath the Spanish moss of an ancient oak tree where they wrote letters to each other, and sealed them in a rusty old metal box. The plan was to return 11 years later and read them. But now, as that date arrives, much has changed. Ellie, bereft of the faith she grew up with, is a single mom living in a tired apartment trying to make ends meet. Sometimes she watches television to catch a glimpse of her old friend - Nolan, now an NBA star, whose terrible personal tragedies fueled his faith and athletic drive in equal measure.

Summary
Love resurrected from lifeless arms happens in the arms of a loving God. Without wealth or family, the widow Ruth left her people and followed Naomi, her beloved Hebrew mother-in-law, to rebuild Naomi’s home in Israel. Provisions gone and starvation at the door, Ruth used all that she had left - a strong back and a willing heart - to gather grain in a field, abandoned after the harvest. Tormented by others, Ruth is shocked to find the owner of the field watching her. Talking to her. Bringing food to her and Naomi. Boaz tells himself his kindness toward Ruth is repayment for the love she has shown to his cousin Naomi. But his heart knows better.

A 'must read' from Tessa Afshar
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. I was unable to put it down - or stop listening. It is very detailed and it is if you are there in person. The storyline - although based on a story from the Bible - is very well written.
What other book might you compare In the Field of Grace to, and why?
Tessa Afshar's other books are very good too. Pearl in the Sand, Harvest of Gold, Harvest of Rubies.
Have you listened to any of Laural Merlington’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I have not yet listened to any other Laurel Merlington performance. Her performance in this book is absolutely brilliant. She draws you in right from the beginning.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I had a range of emotional reactions to 'In the Field of Grace'. There was laughing, crying and moments of upset and moments of elation for each of the characters.
Any additional comments?
Please read it. You will enjoy it from the very first sentence.

So Romantic So Inspirational
“Why did I not read this sooner?” is what you’ll be asking yourself and no, having background knowledge of the story does not spoil or take away from the experience of listening to this book - it actually enhances it!!!
This book brings the book of Ruth into a more intimate, realistic setting so that you feel a part of the story, live it through the lives of the characters. It puts into perspective what the characters must have gone through, the pain, the hope, the peace and the joy they encountered. For me, Biblical verses especially from Genesis, Psalms and Joshua were given renewed meaning in the reflection of daily life struggles. I could see aspects of my life story and those of many I know in the story of Ruth and Boaz...and though many parts are fictional, the fictional is the ordinary reality of many lives today. And that’s why this is a lovely book to read, because it’s just a literary way of doing what preachers and we ordinary people do with the stories and words from the Bible - we apply them, find meaning and relevance to our actual life experiences.
This is a tale beautifully written and wonderfully told!!

New insights about Old Testament Ruth
Have you ever wondered why Ruth, from the Old Testament story, left her homeland of Moab to go to a new home in Israel? Did she know what was in store for her there? The scriptures imply that Ruth's decision came from her virtuous character; her loyalty to Naomi. After listening to this book, I would add that it is likely Ruth's decision also came from courage that rested on a foundation of faith in God.
This book extended and enhanced my understanding of Ruth, adding fictional details that helped me consider all that she really would have had to face... including the challenges that could have come her way. In watching Ruth face those fictional challenges, this book emphasizes a truth, and gives a strong message of hope to the listener: that God can transform tragedy into triumph! Also, He can use any one of us to bless the lives of others. All He requires is a willing and trusting heart.
I very much enjoyed the author's take on the story; it is very much in keeping with the impression I get about Ruth when I read the Bible.

Absolutely Totally Beautiful
What made the experience of listening to In the Field of Grace the most enjoyable?
Everything. A book worthy of its title, for it is full of grace and beauty.
What was one of the most memorable moments of In the Field of Grace?
There were many such moments. The wisdom and the prayers are seamlessly woven into the reality of every day life in a way that felt like blessings my soul soaked up like parched soil.
Which character – as performed by Laural Merlington – was your favorite?
Ruth, of course, but she did a wonderful job with all of them.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. I wept. I was there. I feel like I truly met Ruth, and Boaz, and Naomi, they felt like kin, and I miss them.
Any additional comments?
This is an absolutely beautiful novel. As a novelist myself, I feel humbled, at a loss for words. At first I felt the Epilogue was an intrusion, but I came to love Ruth so much, it all fell into place and I cried, again, this time because the Book of Ruth, so passionately and gracefully told by Tessa Afshar, had ended.

Field of Grace
Would you listen to In the Field of Grace again? Why?
I really enjoyed the book, however there were placed in the story that was to long and drawn out.
What other book might you compare In the Field of Grace to and why?
It was similar to the story Rahab, but the book on Rahab was far better.
What does Laural Merlington bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She's an excellent narrator.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The care that Boaz took to keep Ruth safe all the way through his marriage to her. :D
Any additional comments?
Good book.
