About this listen

One of the most important horror collections of modern times, back at last!

Karl Edward Wagner (1945-1994) has earned a reputation as one of the finest horror writers of the modern era, but his work has been out of print and nearly unobtainable for many years. His seminal volume In a Lonely Place collects eight of his best tales, including "In the Pines," a classic ghost story evocatively set in the Tennessee woods, "Beyond Any Measure," an original take on the vampire story, "River of Night's Dreaming," a surreal and nightmarish masterpiece inspired by The King in Yellow, and the author's most famous tale, "Sticks," a disturbing story thought by many to have been the basis for The Blair Witch Project.

This new edition includes all the stories from the original 1983 edition, plus an additional rare tale and the author's afterword from the Scream/Press limited edition, and features a new introduction by Ramsey Campbell.

Loved this. Not heard of the writer until recently and enjoyed everything about it. Amazing, dark and sinister tales.

Brilliant works

I was surprised and delighted to find a new (to me) horror author I had never heard of, and that I instantly liked. This is absolutely top notch, quality horror. I imagine Wagner's name is unknown because he had such a short career - I can't think of another reason.

He should be counted among the best contemporary horror writers, such a shame that no one seems to have heard of him. I can only hope there will be more audio book versions of his novels. I have found an author who's catalogue I intend to read through in full. Last time this happened was a decade ago when I discovered Clark Ashton Smith.

This author should be counted among horror greats

Long overdue in audio, classic collection

I have read and listened to and reread this collection.
The audible voice actor is absolutely perfect.
The stories are a haunting blend of horror and weird and dark humour and humanity.
Wagner was taken from us too early, too damn early.

Hadn't heard of this author before and so took a chance; was not disappointed. There are some excellent stories collected here, very imaginative and atmospheric, all superbly read, to transport you to a spooky place as you listen. If you know Karl Edward Wagner then you'll be on familiar ground with these tales, and if like me you're coming to this audiobook for the first time, then you'll (probably) love it.
