Summary
Two weeks of rest and recuperation - that's what the doctor ordered. Detective Sergeant DC Smith could listen to some music, make some of his own, and maybe even catch up on his reading; he is almost looking forward to it. And then there is a knock on the door. It's only his next-door neighbor, but it is the beginning of a sequence of events that will bring him face to face with some of the darkest episodes and the most dangerous people from his own past. This is Smith's fifth investigation, but this time it's personal.

Fantastic series
This is such a great series from a writer I hadn’t come across before. The hero is an older policeman, and has the stoicism and humour of you can’t get enough of. He is patient and kind, but stands up for himself in any dangerous situation. Self-effacing and honest, I wish I could meet him!
The one I’ve just finished is mid-series, and is one of the best.
A great narrator too. Highly recommended.

The past is always with us
Liked the sense of place the portrayal of a complex society in Northern Ireland which is not completely distant from the troubles and the pain caused by the recent past events
Good narration. Accents ok but occasionally slipped.
Love DC and this was all about him not look forward to his return to the smithfits in the next in the series

Cleverly written
A difficult subject to write about. DC is on his own and only has his wits to guide him. Really liking this set of books x

Loving Smith/Colgate
I wasn’t sure about this book to start with but I love how the author has developed and shared DC’s back story and history. Younger readers may read this as I would a story around WWII - but for the generations who remember the ‘troubles’ it is a whole different read. Found myself wondering If some characters are based around current real figures - nothing as strange as the truth! Another great story - I am now addicted to this series - on to the next.

Just Superb!
A change from the usual crime story, with more detail of DC’s past life emerging from his time in Belfast. Still as sensitive and engaging as ever with more than a hint of danger and maybe reflecting the reality of Belfast in The 21st Century, this book was again compulsive and a pleasure to listen to.

Great.
I am loving this series and this book was particularly good, with the Northern Ireland 'mystery' to solve. The narration was first class as usual.

A change of scene for this instalment
I absolutely love this series and it's main character DC Smith. This time we are visiting Belfast to fill in the gaps of DC's past.Very clever this because it not only admirably does the gap filling it makes a break in the pattern for those of us hooked on the series and listening to one book straight after another. A change of location, time and pace shakes listeners out of their complacency - in this series one book doesn't have exactly the same formula as the others. If you haven't yet discovered this series go back to Book 1 and get started.
