Summary

Set in California apple country, a strike by migrant workers spirals out of control, as principled defiance turns into blind fanaticism. Caught in this upheaval is Jim Nolan, a once aimless man who finds himself briefly becoming the leader of the strike before being crushed in its service.

Insight into the world of 'fruit tramps'

I listened to this as a follow up to The Grapes of Wrath. In terms of scale and ambition, In Dubious Battle is a pale match, but I still found this a compelling read.

Telling the story of 'Reds', for one thing, still feels a subversive statement. The world evoked is believable, and the characters dynamic enough that my feelings were constnstly shifting - is the 'cause' really justified in these things? Despite any misgivings I was still on the edge of my seat plenty of times.

I thought the reader was good - with so many male characters the different voices made it very easy to follow.

Steinbeck Corker!

Loved this performance it was right on the nail!! The book I already loved but hearing it read to me was phenomenal! The detail in the scenes is fabulous. I am always IN a Steinbeck book!
