Summary

The new book from acclaimed writer Mark Dawson (author of the number one best-selling John Milton series), In Cold Blood is an action-packed thriller about ruthless betrayal and bloodthirsty vengeance.

Beatrix Rose was the most dangerous assassin in an off-the-books government kill squad until her former boss betrayed her. A decade later, she emerges from the Hong Kong underworld with payback on her mind. They gunned down her husband and kidnapped her daughter, and now the debt needs to be repaid. It's a blood feud she didn't start but is going to finish. Beatrix has already crossed one name off her Kill List. Her second target is a mercenary being held hostage by Somali terrorists. Can she infiltrate the most dangerous failed state on the planet and scrub him off the List, too?

Packed with explosive action and pause-resistant suspense, this is the must-listen first novel in a brand new series that is sure to be as successful as the John Milton series.

entertaining

Liked the story but narrator isn't my favour. Some of the main character accents are a bit iffy.

Cracking story rather let down by narration

Would you consider the audio edition of In Cold Blood to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version of this story, but having read other books by the same author which I have thoroughly enjoyed, I suspect that both would be equally enjoyable. The audio edition could be better than the print version with a better narration

Who was your favorite character and why?

The heroine Beatrix Rose is my favourite character, she is very well developed in the story, and the 'back story' to why she is on the vendetta is very well explained.I also like the light and dark of this character, she is a loving and caring mother (albeit with some rather strange ideas on what makes a good education!) but is also a ruthless and skilfull killer.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Mark Deakins?

The narrator had a rather droning voice, and I found it difficult to concentrate on the story for more than about 45 mins. at a time, so anyone with a more involving voice and who could do a more convincing english accent would be preferable.

Any additional comments?

The story, particularly towards the end is very exciting, but the narrator's voice didn't really convey this, and didn't carry any particular emotion, which I believe detracted from the overall impression.

*Beatrix is on the hunt*

Continuing her revenge plan Beatrix is after the agents who did the unthinkable and worked for the very secret ‘Group Fifteen’ they are who you call on behalf of the government when all else fails. She was their number one agent until she was betrayed and she is on a mission to make them pay. She walks into any situation that most would run a mile from, she shows no fear and possess the most cold, dead eyes that most flee from.

She is not the one you want to cross and she will take you down and shows no mercy. I pity the ones that she is going after and they will not even see her coming, I look forward to the next instalment, this was thrilling

Super Thriller

If you could sum up In Cold Blood in three words, what would they be?

Exciting, Accurate, Fast.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Beatrix. She was strong yet vulnerable.

Have you listened to any of Mark Deakins’s other performances? How does this one compare?

My first time

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Agent B the revenge.

Any additional comments?

A thriller that you wanted to listen to until the end.
The plot is good and the descriptions of the places and experiences accurate as far as I can tell.
The characters are very realistic and you soon get to feel their situations.
The narration is clear and well read.
This is the first book that I have listened to from Mark Dawson which has me already looking forward to purchasing book 2 in this series and also looking back to his earlier novels.
I really recommend this audiobook.

Gripping start to this series!

Having read all the Milton books by Mark Dawson, I wanted to get into the next series and wow, this did not disappoint.
Beatrix is brutal and formidable and I listened to this book in TWO sittings. I just could not stop. Loads of pace, fantastic action and a driving narrative that doesn't let up! It picks up the story we were introduced to in a Milton story perfectly and I loved the extra detail and finding out the fate of some of the characters. It's taut, and punchy. All killer, no filler.
I can't wait to get into the next book.

A fan, but not the right narrator

I love the John Milton series, and was keen to follow up on Beatrix Rose after Milton found her. The story is good, just as you'd expect from Mark Dawson. I WOULD listen again, but for the narration.

Don't get me wrong, there's expression and character to Mark Deakins' reading but, in a series of books where all of the key characters are British, and the great selection of reader for Milton, did they really feel an American with one of the worst British accents I've heard for a long time was the best fit?!

I will listen to books two and three because I want to hear the demise of the old Control, but I'll be cringing at the narration.
