About this listen

A murder with no weapon or motive. A detective on edge. A community that wants answers. Impurity is the first in a series of six books featuring Leeds based Detective Inspector Stewart Gardener.

One fateful night, DI Stewart Gardener intervenes in a street brawl, and his wife is shot dead. Finding his wife’s murderer is never far from his mind, but with no leads and a hazy recollection of events, it seems hopeless.

Soon he is presented with a shocking case. A man is found dead in a grubby apartment, and It is not long before another man meets the same fate. The deaths are caused by a rapid disintegration of the victims’ flesh.

Pathology cannot ascertain the cause. The only connection between the victims is they both worked seasonally as Santas. Who would want to kill such innocuous men as these? Can DI Gardener overcome his grief and solve the case?

I'm an avid procedural crime fan and these are up there with the best. Love Greg Wagland's narration too. I got through all the DI Bliss and now loving DI Gardener. Just the right amount of dark, left of centre, crime. Nice and edgy. Pretty gruesome stuff, in a good way. Can't wait to get on to the next one. Good, snappy, hard hitting pace. Great characters. Great support in DS Riley. Thank goodness for some meaty plots with no saccharine relationships for Gardener. He's suitably moody up there in the awesome North Yorks. More please.

So glad I found these

Easy voice to listen too, good story line, wasn't sure at start but I got into it

Very good performance

An excellent story with lots of side stories it was well delivered even the gory bits were only for context not filler. It’s definitely not a cosy crime but it’s not a killing spree either. I worked out the killer but it really didn’t matter. I’m looking forward to the next book.

An unputdownable listen I even overlooked the cringy NI Accent
