CUSTOMER REVIEW

When former serial killer Carol takes her place in a luxury retirement home, she begins to find her feet with a small new group of friends. If she can only keep her past hidden, maybe she has a chance at happiness.

That's when she discovers that, absurdly, every other one of Sheldon Oaks' residents was involved in the law somehow. It's not long before her true identity is leaked, and when a former police commissioner resident is murdered, naturally all eyes turn to her...

Now she must solve the case to prove her innocence - just as her new friends start their own investigations into whether there is more than one killer at Sheldon Oaks.

Praise for Fergus Craig:

Critic reviews

Witty, fast-paced, and plenty surprising, Craig's cracked cozy goes down smooth. It's a delightfully twisted romp. (Publisher's Weekly - Starred Review)
A fine mystery whose mordant humor makes it outstanding. (Kirkus - Starred Review)
[A] winning mixture of humor and seriousness, baking and bingo (FirstClue - Book of the Week)
Delightful, funny and hard to put down. (Jonn Elledge, bestselling author of A History of the World in 47 Borders)
What a lovely romp - as it were - Fergus is so funny and brilliant. (Miranda Hart)
Carol, a female serial killer, and her unlikely cast of new friends are a joy to get to know in this unique and twisty murder mystery. (E.C. Nevin, author of A Novel Murder)
Craig clearly relies on his background as actor, comedian, and TV writer to achieve pitch-perfect timing in making murder most fun (Booklist - starred review)
Making murder funny is a delicate business, but actor and comedian Craig manages it with aplomb in a wry, witty style
Equal parts cozy mystery and redemption tale, this is a brisk, mordantly funny romp about second chances and the inconvenient persistence of reputation
Actor/comedian Craig pulls off the neat feat of creating a thoroughly likable serial killer... Craig gives her a dry wit but reveals that she has soft spots, too. Carol is simply a killer character

I was dubious, another murder club at a retirement home but the storyline was really good, very sad in parts and funny in others. Well written and performed.

Great characters

I’m not sure I’m the audience for this audiobook going by other reviews, which feels strange, as I was probably one of the first to pre-order it. I get the sense that many of the other reviews are from listeners new to the author, and perhaps fans of retirement-home murder club stories.

I’ve listened to the author’s previous audiobooks multiple times on long drives and loved them — the humour, the tone, the characters, and especially how the narration enhanced everything through its delivery.

This one, unfortunately, falls flat.

I gave it several chances, but eventually realised the issue: the inflections in the narration barely change between characters, so everything blends into one. The result is a very flat listening experience. It’s all delivered in the same soft tone, which just doesn’t fit and, at times, grates.

To Fergus — I’m sorry, as I genuinely love your work.

For anyone considering this, I’d recommend buying the written version instead… and if you’re new to his work, start with the earlier audiobooks. A very talented comedic writer, but I can almost hear a publisher saying, “You’ve taken the police material as far as it can go — time to reach a new audience". Sadly, not for me.

A talented writer… just not this time on audio

as much as the disappointment of it not being Fishback novel was, this is a fun mystery, really well narrated with plenty of humour. where the dt le carre books were pure spoof, this feels like more of a funny take on cosy crime books, the humour is not forced, feels natural, the silliness is still there but not as daft and the delivery, whilst not fishback, totally delivers on point.

fun tale, excellently delivered
