Storia d'Italia - Il tramonto dell'Impero Romano e l'affermazione della Chiesa Cattolica' ripercorre il periodo in cui la religione cristiana prende il definitivo sopravvento sul paganesimo e sulle altre confessioni religiose durante la decadenza dell'Impero e nei secoli successivi, fino a diventare Stato Pontificio durante il regno di Carlo Magno. Nel 388 Ambrogio, vescovo di Milano, si ribella alla tutela di Teodosio imperatore e anzi la capovolge sino a rivendicare la guida spirituale di tutto l'Impero. Di qui la fine delle persecuzioni, le travagliate lotte fra papato e gli altri culti cristiani, in particolare l'arianesimo, e l'inizio del suo potere temporale e spirituale sull'Italia e sull'Europa.
