Pressato dagli editori, Fëdor Dostoevskij scrisse "Il giocatore" in poche settimane 'per necessità': doveva pagare dei debiti di gioco; eppure questo romanzo è diventato un capolavoro e un punto di riferimento (ed uno dei testi più brillanti) della narrativa russa dell'Ottocento. Il giovane precettore Aleksej Ivànovic è al seguito di una stravagante famiglia russa in vacanza nella città termale tedesca di Roulettenburg, il cui casinò attira molti turisti. Mentre lo stesso Aleksej racconta come viene posseduto dal demone del gioco d'azzardo, attorno a lui si svolgono le vicende di un gruppo di personaggi alquanto pittoreschi: un vecchio generale russo, follemente innamorato di una giovane francese dal passato turbolento, e la sua sdegnosa figliastra Polina; un ricco inglese, onesto e timido, e uno spregiudicato marchese francese; e infine un'energica "baboulinka" (nonnina) russa...
La vicenda viene raccontata dal protagonista come se fosse una confidenza fatta ad un gruppo di amici intimi, e la narrazione procede con un ritmo incalzante scandito da indizi, dubbi, supposizioni e interpretazioni che creano un atmosfera di suspense che solo nel finale trova soluzione. La lettura, intima e confidenziale, è dell'attore Luigi Marangoni.
