Story
Women are rarely cold-blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution. The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

Ellen was just trying to help a stranger. That was how it started: giving a few minutes respite to a flustered young mother sitting opposite her on the train. A few minutes holding her baby while the mother makes an urgent call. The weight of the child in her arms making Ellen's heart ache for what she can never have. Five minutes pass. Ten. The train pulls into a station and Ellen is stunned to see the mother hurrying away down the platform without looking back.

Fran finds her standing by the swings. A little girl, Esther, no older than seven years old, by herself in the dead of night, her pretty but old-fashioned yellow dress covered in grass stains and her hair dishevelled. Summary
If I Can't Have You by Charlotte Levin is an all-consuming novel about loneliness, obsession and how far we go for the ones we love.
My name is Constance Little.
This is my love story.
But this isn’t the way it was supposed to end.
After fleeing Manchester for London, Constance attempts to put past tragedies behind her and make a fresh start. When she embarks on a relationship with the new doctor at the medical practice where she works, she’s convinced she’s finally found the love and security she craves.
Then he ends it. But if life has taught her anything, it’s that if you love someone, you should never let them go.
That's why for Constance Little, her obsession is only just beginning....
Critic reviews
"One of the best books I’ve ever read." (Ruth Jones)
"This is superb...and compulsive and disturbing and very well done indeed." (Harriet Tyce, author of Blood Orange)
"An exceptionally raw and visceral and painfully funny novel." (Emma Flint, author of Little Deaths)

The best thing you'll have heard in years!
This was absolutely superb, with characters that gripped me from the start, and a story that kept me awake at night.
Very hard to put away!
The lead character, Constance, like any of us - is prone to weakness, and often just one decision away from a completely different life, yet she finds hidden strength when she needs it. She's a great character - (think Alice Morgan in Luther, though with much less killing).
Others easily raise the right amount of emotion, whether it's disgust, empathy or sheer hatred.
I didn't expect the ending, though it certainly left me feeling satisfied.
I really hope Charlotte Levin gets working on her next book soon. I very much doubt this will be her last book, she clearly has plenty of talent!

Average- borderline boring
I held out until the end because of all the good reviews but honestly I’m confused as I found the book really average. Fairly boring and predictable story line not particularly well written with random characters that don’t really contribute anything to the story overall. Waste of a credit to be honest

Really enjoyed this!
I do love a good obsessed girlfriend story (see also The perfect girlfriend) and this is excellent. Can't say much without spoiling the story, but why Constance did what she did is very well explained - It was very moving, i actually teared up twice towards the end. Perfect ending. Great narrator really made you believe in the characters. I just have one suggestion to the author - do a version 2 of this and take out the way Constance keeps being sick, it is very irritating and it doesnt add anything to a really good story, even after being explained. Still recommend this book despite that and give it 5 stars
