Summary

It isn't easy making a living as a lady's companion when one possesses a sharp tongue and an original mind. That's why Emma Greyson has gone through three such positions in six months. But penning her own reference and hiding her spirited nature behind a pair of spectacles won't keep her out of trouble for long. Her latest post requires her presence at a tiresome country house party, where the cream of London society has assembled, and where it's downright impossible to avoid the advances of lecherous gentlemen. On one particular night, Emma has no choice but to duck inside a wardrobe to hide. Shockingly, the space is already occupied - by none other than the legendary Edison Stokes!

Stokes may rule his business empire with a steely hand, but he doesn't have the heart to deny the desperate request of an old friend. The plea has sent him on the trail of an anonymous thief who has stolen an ancient book of arcane potions. He suspects the quarry is among the party's guests - and he knows the villain is on the lookout for a highly intuitive woman on whom to test a certain elixir. Aware that she's in danger, Edison resolves to keep an eye on her by employing her as his "assistant." But he soon discovers what several previous employers have learned the hard way. Hiring Emma is one thing, getting her to follow orders is quite another! For Emma, the new post brings exciting challenges, including unexpected passion and chilling danger. But when murder strikes, she realizes the awful truth. Unless she and Edison devise a scheme to outwit the merciless killer, she could forever lose the man of her dreams - and even her very life.

Disappointing

Deeply disappointed by the severe abridgement of this story. Several key elements of the mystery were chopped. Stick to the real book or the ebook rather than this abridged version.
On the positive side, the reader's voice was delightful!

Perhaps a little too abridged

I bought this book specifically because I had a mundane task to do that would take 3 hours. The reader did an excellent job with characters and accents, the book was a nice light read, and filled the required time-slot.

But, this book was almost too short. I couldn't help but feel the romance would have been sweeter, and the characters a little more sympathetic had this not been chopped down so much. The romance was there, it certainly wasn't a unique or grand romance (just the usual types of plot devices that one sees in many romances), but I didn't expect much more than this. I think I might rather have spent my book credit on something with a little more substance. But if you are looking for a fast and light listen, then this is your book.

(A warning -- main characters in this book are followers of the the ancient order of Vanza, so if you are a stickler for "keeping it real", you might find this little add on of supernatural-kung-fu-meets-mysticism all a little goofy.)

I have enjoyed most of Amanda Quick's work...I just wish this one wasn't abridged.

Good listen

I like the unabridged books best so I would have prefered to hear the longer version of this book. The reader was very good and it was a great way to pass 3 hours. I love Amanda Quick so if you like her books you will like this one.

Severely edited!!!!

The narrator was great. She had a plesent voice and makes the characters there own. Unfortunately I could not enjoy the story knowing how much was missing from the original. This is one of my favorite Amanda Quick stories so I have read the book several times. This vertion is so edited i found myself becoming aggravated. The editing took alot away from the story. including the development of the love story in its self. Very disappointed. If you are a real JAK fan then buy the unedited audio book.

Good for an Abridged edition

The narrator does a wonderful job with the story, but a lot is cut out.

This is an abridged but first in the Vanza series.

Not the entire book is included in narration. Only paid $.95 so I got what I paid for. If you know story and what it in it's entirety, best look for a different copy.

love it!

Many years ago I listened to this novel while I was painting in the heat. Loved it so much, I started it again upon its completion! Just as good today. Fast paced, hokey, interresting, fun!
