Summary

The explosive book from ex-MI5 surveillance officer Tom Marcus takes the listener on a non-stop, adrenaline-fuelled ride as he hunts down those who would do our country harm.

Tom spent years working covertly to stop those who want to do us harm. In his best-selling memoir Soldier Spy, he told how he was recruited and described some of his top-secret operations. In I Spy, he takes us deeper undercover as he puts his life on the line once more.

I Spy plunges the listener straight into the action as Tom and his team race to prevent terrorists from causing carnage on our streets and outsmart Russian agents, blocking a daring plot that threatens the security of the nation. Relying on their quick wits, training and courage, the extraordinary men and women of MI5 are under intense pressure every day. Not everyone is suited for the work, and Tom shows how the incredibly tough challenges he faced growing up gave him the mental strength and skills to survive in a dangerous world.

Gritty and eye-opening, this is a unique insight into a hidden war and the sacrifices made by those who fight it. You will never take your safety for granted again.

This audiobook includes an interview between author, Tom Marcus, and reader, Jason Langley.

Mesmerising!

From the opening scene to the end this simply had me in thrall. I'll claim no expertise on how authentic this actually is, after all my knowledge of MI5 is made up of the output of various thriller writers and not much more. However, it feels real, the authenticity promised by an ex-operative seems to be delivered in spades.

A big part of the reason for this, it has to be said, is the excellent narration by Jason Langley, he strikes just the right tone and in combination with Marcus's writing it felt possible to imagine being out there as part of a surveillance team, alone in a bar of strangers or flat out in the grass of a Welsh hillside.

Just how complete a picture it is we can't tell, after all I am sure that MI5 would take a dim view on too much of their operational procedure being revealed. It is though fascinating and what's more it also provides examples of the toll that this dangerous, highly pressurised work has on those who do it. And thankful we are that they do!

If you liked the previous books by this author and want some more then this delivers brilliantly.

very insightful - slightly over-performed

really insightful view both of the work that the UK security services do, and of the mental pressures that such work exerts. I wasnt expecting the book to deal with mental health, and to be honest at first I was less interested in this aspect, but as the book progressed this turned out to be extremely interesting.
I was surprised, and hooked by the level of detail that 'Tom' went into on the tactics, techniques and procedures - as well as the play-by-play details of each mission... which is far more detailed than anything I've personally seen before... at least for operations that were so recent and still relevant to today's environment.

The performance was, in my opinion, slightly over done with too much emphasis delivered on each and every sentence. listening to the epilogue/extra content it's clear that the narrator has a much more relaxed natural voice, which oddly enough is very similar to 'Tom's' - I personally think it would have been better had the narrator taken this more relaxed tone through certain sections of the book, to give a more varied sence of pace and emphasis.

Overall though, I loved it. smashed through the book in a couple of car journeys - will definitely listen to again.

If you Read Soilder Spy you'll love this one.

it's a mix of stories which were not in the first book. but also a look into Tom Marcus's background. how he grew up and how he lives during and after MI5.

Alot of eye opening tales which show not only the seriousness of national security but how the very people who give the most for our protection, then deal with life after the service.

well read and narrated, great book well worth a read.

Absolutely gripping, a fascinating insight...

Having always been fascinated by the "behind the scenes" workings and the unity that everyone works, on all tiers, to ensure national security, I was keen to get the audio book. Perfectly read by Jason and Georgia, this works so well as an audio book, because you feel immersed in the simulated radio transmissions and very much in the moment.
I absolutely loved it. Well done to all!!

Another great one

The story is great and I'm only half way through. The Narration is one of the best I've experienced through audio book. Gripping as always Mr 'Marcus'.

Gripping story

A good story, with gripping moments of tension. Shame the dialogue of all the radio transmissions were unbelievably detailed, polite and obviously adapted and written for non service persons to understand. The heavy hand of the security service censor has affected the accuracy, which is a shame, but necessary in the interesting times we live on.

Another engaging book by Tom Marcus

If you’ve read Tom’s previous two books this follows a similar pattern, but it’s interesting and engaging.
I listened to this title on audible, the narrator is great and gives a good portrayal of the author.
I’d certainly recommend it to others.

Zero Six

Another good book by Tom. Gripping and exciting sometimes while listening I'd realize how I was hanging on every word. Obviously if I can find myself white knuckling it just listening to it it's no wonder he had PTSD. I do recommend his other book soldier spy first but this is a really good follow up.

Even better than his last.

Amazing. You feel like you are right there with them on team as they conduct their operations. Even better than his last!
