About this listen

While society called his disability an obstacle and limitation, Neil argued that his "flourishing dystonia" allowed him to think, explore, and create art in a way most people cannot. True to his words, Neil embraced every opportunity to experience life to its fullest, from navigating the Alaskan wilderness in a wheelchair to commanding the spotlight on stage.

In this deeply personal account, Neil invites listeners into his world as he remembers adventures and escapades, triumphs and disappointments. Through it all, Neil's humor and wisdom reminds us to rethink labels and look beyond the obvious.

Includes a radio interview with the author's sister Kendra Marcus and S. H. Chambers on Letters and Politics with Mitch Jeserich on KPFA Berkeley

It is fantastic to be able to dive into the thoughts and words of Neil Marcus so resonantly spoken by Rod Laithem. Neil was such an inspiration for me and many others, when I met him 40 years ago. He modelled intelligence, humour and playfulness and being fully human. Even as I struggled to understand his speech, he hosted me in Berkeley and showed me what living an empowered life looks like, despite severe disability.

Huge thanks to all his friends and allies for their dedication in keeping his legacy alive and making it accessible for present and future generations. Not to be missed.

Hearty insight to an empowered life
