The first audiobook in the Claudia Seferius mystery series, set in 13 BC.

How far would you go to protect your secret? Would you lie? Would you steal? Would you...kill? Having connived her way into marriage with a wealthy wine merchant, Claudia quickly grows bored, so when her secret gambling debts spiral, she hits on a resourceful way to pay off the moneylenders, offering "personal services" to high-ranking Romans.

That is, until her clients start turning up dead. When the charismatic investigator, Marcus Cornelius Orbilio, digs too deep for comfort, Claudia is forced to track down the killer herself, before the authorities or her husband find out what she's up to.

The story of a Roman matron with bad habits is quite fun but, oh dear, the narration! I have no idea why they decided this should be done in a British accent. None of the characters are British and the poor narrator might have been American, was occasionally Australian but definitely isn’t British. It was a bit painful and detracted from the story.

Good fun but terrible accents

Great fun! Brilliant, easy listening, romp of a murder mystery set in Ancient Rome. Claudia is a fantastic character! Superbly written by Marilyn Todd. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Narrator was good, although clearly an American putting on a British accent (bit odd sounding at times!) - but engaging and clear.

Great fun!
