Summary

National Book Awards 2014: Crime/Thriller Book of the Year

Can you commit the perfect crime?

Pilgrim is the code name for a man who doesn't exist. The adopted son of a wealthy American family, he once headed up a secret espionage unit for US intelligence. Before he disappeared into anonymous retirement, he wrote the definitive book on forensic criminal investigation. But that book will come back to haunt him. It will help NYPD detective Ben Bradley track him down. And it will take him to a run-down New York hotel room where the body of a woman is found facedown in a bath of acid, her features erased, her teeth missing, her fingerprints gone. It is a textbook murder - and Pilgrim wrote the book.

What begins as an unusual and challenging investigation will become a terrifying race against time to save America from oblivion. Pilgrim will have to make a journey from a public beheading in Mecca to a deserted ruin on the Turkish coast via a Nazi death camp in Alsace and the barren wilderness of the Hindu Kush in search of the faceless man who would commit an appalling act of mass murder in the name of his god.

This is now the entire audiobook, not in two parts.

One of those books you wish would never end!

Had me gripped from start to finish. So often these days I'm disappointed with the ending of a book but not on this occasion.

Looking forward to Pilgrim's return!

Ludlum + Clancy +Patterson = I Am Pligrim

Would you consider the audio edition of I Am Pilgrim to be better than the print version?

I think so, the narration is brilliant and the place and character names would have been pronounced correctly.

What was one of the most memorable moments of I Am Pilgrim?

Just a great thriller. Very reminiscent of Ludlum and Clancy for helping the reader understand the organisation, confusion and intricacy of the global intelligence networks. Patterson for a smart likeable antagonist (and in a perverse way antagonist) and the way he solves the mystery.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I liked the background stories and incidents who made the Saracen and Pilgrim who they were.

Any additional comments?

A great unputdownable thriller. Perfect for the summer holidays.

keeps moving from start to finish

Performance competent but a little cheesy, like that of an over - eager drama teacher. Some of the accents are hilarious, Yorkshire being a particular peach.

Prose style is consistent with the content, but I did tire of hearing the protagonist is 'the best there is'. Plot and action are compelling, although occasionally descending into moments of Dan Brown.

Brutally Graphic

I had to finish listening to this book as it was far to brutally graphic for me. The story was rich and interesting initially but then....

I Am Pilgrim

Well written, and carefully interwoven storylines of international terrorism, murder and the personal journeys of the key players. Brilliant narration.

The most amazing book

This is a MUST READ. It is without doubt the best book I have ever read. This is the second time I’ve listened to it - several years apart. Well narrated - I haven’t heard better - and a wonderfully intricate story - so well written, with lovely turns of phrase. I honestly can’t recommend it too highly. I cannot wait for Terry Hayes’s next book which I believe is being released on Audible in December 2021.
