Summary

John Smith is not your average teenager. He regularly moves from small town to small town. He changes his name and identity. He does not put down roots. He cannot tell anyone who or what he really is. If he stops moving those who hunt him will find and kill him.

But you can’t run forever. So when he stops in Paradise, Ohio, John decides to try and settle down. To fit in. And for the first time he makes some real friends. People he cares about – and who care about him. Never in John’s short life has there been space for friendship, or even love.

But it’s just a matter of time before John’s secret is revealed.

He was once one of nine. Three of them have been killed. John is Number Four. He knows that he is next...

The story is derivative and predictable and the characters two-dimensional, yet it's reasonably engaging just the same. I have seen the film so I wasn't expecting any surprises! Given that it's aimed at teenage boys, it does what it says on the tin & the amount of attention it requires is just right for my 2 1/2 hr, post-flight journey home.

The narrator is pretty awful, however, and nearly led me to give up listening altogether. His intonation is bizarre, he becomes whiny & squeaky to indicate a female character and his best accent, that of Henri, sounds more Eastern European than French.

The 3 stars are for the story alone.

Excellent Listen

Fantastic book recommended for teenage sci-fi fans. The reader is decent but his voice is slightly annoying.

The final fight was better in film

Out of all the books I've read that have been turned into films, this is the first that I felt was better in film form. That's not to say the book is bad, it certainly isn't, just that o felt the final fight scene was better in the film.

Better than the movie

Loved it. So much detail that were lots in the movie. When is the next book coming? Want to hear more of John's (or whoever he is going to be next) adventures against the Mogadorians.

For young audience so not bad

Read the books when i was a kid and re-listening to them now. Story is definitely for a younger audience but isnt bad. Narrator does NOT do female voices well at all and completely changes how i imagined certain characters reading the first time round but second book thankfully has a female narrator.
Know that its probs not meant for people over 16 and can be super cringe but not bad considered.

Great ish

I absolutely loved this story, it's well written and well read my inly issue was that the narrators voice was slightly too deep for the female voices and it sounded like a someone making fun rather than a serious portrait. that is not a criticism of the narrator however I still think he did a great job.
