About this listen

This book will make your birth better. It is for every woman and every type of birth.

As featured on Dragons’ Den.

Expert hypnobirthing teacher and founder of The Positive Birth Company, Siobhan Miller has made it her mission to change the way women around the world approach and experience birth. Through her teaching she seeks to educate and empower women—and their birth partners—so that they can enjoy amazing and positive birth experiences, however they choose to bring their babies into the world.

In this book, Siobhan debunks common myths about hypnobirthing and explains why she believes it can make every type of birth a better experience—from a water birth at home to an unplanned caesarean in theatre.

So, what is hypnobirthing? Essentially, it's a form of antenatal education, an approach to birth that is both evidence-based and logical. Hypnobirthing certainly doesn't involve being hypnotised; instead, it teaches you how your body works on a muscular and hormonal level when in labour and how you can use various relaxation techniques to ensure you are working with your body (rather than against it), making birth more efficient and comfortable.

Siobhan's advice and guidance will change your mindset and enable you to navigate your birth with practical tools that ensure you feel calm and in control throughout.

By the time you finish this book you'll feel relaxed, capable and genuinely excited about giving birth.

I downloaded and completed the Positive Birth Company’s online hypnobirthing course which I found interesting and so decided to follow up with this book. Sort of wish I hadn’t now. The book is exceptionally patronising and incredibly repetitive. I don’t know how many times she says to “change the space with electric tea lights” or “listen to a guided meditation or podcast” or how many time she recommends a “quick spritz with an essential oils room spray” but it’s A LOT. Whilst I understand the principals of hypnobirthing I’d definitely recommend the course more as it feels less like she is forcing her opinions on you and rather presenting the options available. In the book her tone feels incredibly judgemental and pushing towards home birth and vaginal delivery without any pain relief and whilst she adds a “if you choose something different that’s up to you” at the end of these sections, I personally felt it was more agenda pushing than anything.
Whilst the information around what’s happening to your body during labour is informative, the concept of breathing and staying relaxed throughout labour using whatever means necessary (see previously mentioned tealights/podcast/room spray!) the concept is hardly revolutionary.

Incredibly patronising and repetitive

I decided to give this book a go as I had a credit to use and am expecting my little one this summer. This book has completely changed my view on labour and how I would like it to pan out and I now feel happy and confident moving forward. Thank you so much Siobhan!

As someone who has grown up watching films and hearing negative connotations of labour, this book completely transformed my mindset and I can now confidently say that I’m excited and ready to give birth thanks to Siobhan.
