Admiral Kira Demirci lost the coin toss with her second-in-command and was supposed to be taking a holiday. That meant waiting in the Redward System while Memorial Force’s new carrier Huntress was commissioned and turned over to the mercenary space fleet.

But when a stranger arrives looking to hire Memorial Force to protect her homeworld, Kira finds money, boredom and altruism combining to bring her into action. The majority of her fleet is elsewhere, but she has two heavy warships, including Huntress. More than enough to protect the pacifist system of Samuels from their neighbors.

Those neighbors were armed by Kira’s old foes in the Brisingr System, and she smells the hand of the Equilibrium Institute behind the scheme. A chance to protect the innocent and frustrate two old foes at once is hard to turn down—and even if things go wrong, the rest of her fleet is on their way.

She’s planned for everything. Hasn’t she?

Solid space adventure. Kira Demirci leads a mercenary force to relieve the blockade of pacifist system Samuels by its aggressive neighbour system. Unsurprisingly it turns out that more powerful forces are in play. The story moves at a decent pace and there is plenty of action for space battle enthusiasts. The characters are engaging and we know them well enough from the previous four books in the 'Scattered Stars' series. There is no cliffhanger ending but it becomes evident at the end that a new, greater challenge is ahead. You probably should read The previous books before this one.
The series lacks the depth of character development of Weber, Moon, Bujold and the like and lacks the humour of Alanson, but I will be investing more time in future episodes since I do want to find out what is in store for Demirci at al in the future. The narration is decent - no R.C.Bray perhaps, but a range of accents are portrayed effectively and no irritating inaccuracies to distract from the story. I did find the author's repeated reference to "Kira's boyfriend" -when referring to the main character Conrad Bueller - a little twee - but if that's all I have to complain about......

The ending was definitely not what I was expecting. well done Glynn I never saw that coming. Now you need to hurry up and write the next book 🤯 please. the wait between books.is always the worst.
