Summary

There is an appetite for God. And it can be awakened. I invite you to turn from the dulling effects of food and the dangers of idolatry, and to say with some simple fast: "This much, O God, I want you."Our appetites dictate the direction of our lives - whether it be the cravings of our stomachs, the passionate desire for possessions or power, or the longings of our spirits for God.

But for the Christian, the hunger for anything besides God can be an arch-enemy. While our hunger for God - and Him alone - is the only thing that will bring victory. Do you have that hunger for Him?

If we are full of what the world offers, then perhaps a fast might express, or even increase, our soul's appetite for God. Between the dangers of self-denial and self-indulgence is this path of pleasant pain called fasting. It is the path John Piper invites you to travel in this book. For when God is the supreme hunger of your heart, He will be supreme in everything. And when you are most satisfied in Him, He will be most glorified in you.

Good overall, but wanders off-topic

Started off well, but lost its subject (fasting) and spent a chapter ranting about abortion. I happen to agree with the author on the topic, but if I want to listen to a rant about abortion I will do - I don't really want it inserted into a book on fasting via a tenuous link. 'All these people in the Bible fasted and their motives/methods/pride pleased/displeased God. Because God rewards those who do His will and are nice to others without getting up themselves about the whole business, we should fast and pray about serioua world problems. I am now going to talk about abortion, abortion law in America, American governmental ills and how the Supreme Court ia a failure of democracy for 45 minutes.'

Having said that, the other five hours were excellent. I would just recommend skipping the last chapter as it really doesn't relate to the topic of the book. With that in mind, I would still recommend it to anyone interested in Christian fasting and a Biblical argument for it.

The best answer going to "why fast?"

Although not as deep an epiphany as "Desiring God", this book has deeply challenged me to make fasting a regular part of my walk with the Lord - for His glory.

Great content, even if you're not that interested in fasting!!

Great, even if you're not that interested in fasting. There's lots of interesting content & it's not solely focussed on fasting. I could happily listen to this again a good few times!

Proper Perspective

Excellent book on the correct perspective of fasting and how it fits into the Christian life. Permeated with the author's fervency to glorify and serve God, and exhorts the reader to do the same.

Spiritually invigorating

Would you listen to Hunger for God again? Why?

Yes, it inspires me to develop a closer relationship to God.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It's not written in a narratively but rather in a motivational tone. I am glad to be reminded that to have God fill our souls, we must empty ourselves.

Which scene was your favorite?

The last chapter.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The many scriptural references were helpful in reinforcing deeper concepts.

Any additional comments?

I liked the book!

Two Books In One?

Any additional comments?

The first three quarters of the book were as much spent on biblical support of fasting as they were on defending the practice as a Christian. It felt more like Christian Apologetics than a book on the benefits of fasting and prayer.A large portion of the last quarter of the book turned away from the holy bible to the US Constitution, the decay of modern society, and abortion being the root of all evil. No matter what your Kingdom of this World beliefs are, taking the book away from the Kingdom of God to politics and ideology felt like a bait and switch. Nevertheless, the book does contain some good biblical support of fasting, it is just obscured by apologetics and minimized by the author's direction in the later portion of the book. I will continue my search for good books on prayer and fasting, unfortunately given the above reasons I cannot recommend this as one of them.

Didn't care for voice of narrator

The content of the book was good. But the style of the narrator was so annoying it was hard for me to finish it. I had to start the book over multiple times in places because I longed to tune out quality of the voice.

Fasting Based Upon the Word of God

The numerous Scripture references throughout the book provide the listener with the biblical foundation for Piper's premise on fasting. It contains both warnings of possible pitfalls of fasting and the rewards while always leaving the results to a sovereign God.

The book contains only a few references to historical triumphs through fasting. If one is looking for this material, it is not in this book.

Lord I need to be desperately hungry for you!

“God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭6:21‬ ‭

Another great book by Piper!
