Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Humble Pi, written and read by Matt Parker.

We would all be better off if everyone saw mathematics as a practical ally. Sadly, most of us fear maths and seek to avoid it. This is because mathematics doesn't have good 'people skills' - it never hesitates to bluntly point out when we are wrong. But it is only trying to help! Mathematics is a friend which can fill the gaps in what our brains can do naturally.

Luckily, even though we don't like sharing our own mistakes, we love to listen to tales about what happens when maths errors make the everyday go horribly wrong. Matt Parker explores and explains near misses and mishaps with planes, bridges, the internet and big data as a way of showing us not only how important maths is but how we can use it to our advantage. This comedy of errors is a brilliantly told series of disaster stories with a happy ending.

As if maths on its own wasn't funny enough!

Matt does it again! whether you know him from YouTube or not this author can bring a funny twist to everything mathematical, and that means that he can add a fun twist to everything. This eye opening book will make you reflect on the deepest thoughts with a smile on your face and a nice LoL from time to time!

Fun insight into how maths impacts our lives!

Interesting and well paced subject matter. It is fascinating how many everyday things trace back to numbers and (mis)calculations. Mr Parker is a great narrator, you can tell he's done a lot speaking in his many seconds on this earth.

Funny

I loved this, I'm rubbish at maths, but never once was i made to feel stupid. It was laugh out loud funny, interesting and engaging, the fact he narrated it himself i feel helps as it flows better with his knowledge and appropriate emphasis. A really interesting and educational listen, I would highly recommend it, if give it more stars of i could.

Good fun

Good fun - some of the stories are a little old - but the insight and commentary behind others is engaging. Loses its thread about 2/3 of the way in and becomes a bit esoteric, but recovers back. Overall, great fun

Excellent - enjoyable, interesting and accessible

Great fun, a joy to listen to - Matt's geeky enthusiasm shines through, you can tell he's enjoying himself. Lots of interesting stories really well read. You don't need a maths degree to follow along - it's all explained properly (without sounding dumbed down) - it really shows that Matt's a maths communicator for a living.

Comedy at its fenist

Matt Parker has done a tremendous job of displaying the math behind every day things, and explain what can go wrong with them.

Without losing sight of the monumental impact mistakes can have on people's lives, Matt managed to crack a joke at almost any "turn" of the page

Light-hearted and informative

Fairly interested and easy listening. However, it does feel like I could have just read a Wikipedia summary of entertaining maths mistakes, and would have gotten the same out

The best Mat(t/hs) book this year

Wanted to give it 3, 1 and 4 stars. But it's just too good. So instead I give it 6.28 stars in each category, rounded to the nearest possible star rating. Great job Mat(t/hs)!
