In most fields the consequences are limited, but in healthcare they can be fatal. Every week in England, there are 150 avoidable deaths. Most tragedies are treated as 'inevitable' when in fact they could be prevented simply and cheaply if we were better at learning from mistakes. By committing to a profession where the consequences of a mistake can be life or death, people in healthcare are braver than most of us.

Story
A brilliantly simple look at how we can fix healthcare without drastic policy change and political diatribes. Since FDR, the US healthcare system has been mired in politics and policy. All the while it has only increased in complexity and cost. Today half of all personal bankruptcies are attributable to healthcare costs. Many community hospitals are barely getting by with single digit profit margins. With a system teetering on the edge of a systemic crisis, we need to turn to a brand-new approach to rescue the US healthcare system.

He warned us years ago in a now-famous TED Talk of their arrival in our future. The future, of course, is now, and now is when we have to plan against a next one. How to Prevent the Next Pandemic is a clear and upbeat plan of what every country, every government leader and every individual can do in order to help prevent another pandemic.

The doctor-patient relationship - the heart of medicine - is broken: doctors are too distracted and overwhelmed to truly connect with their patients, and medical errors and misdiagnoses abound. In Deep Medicine, leading physician Eric Topol reveals how artificial intelligence can help. AI has the potential to transform everything doctors do, from notetaking and medical scans to diagnosis and treatment, greatly cutting down the cost of medicine and reducing human mortality.

In most organizations, the work that produces value for customers is carried out by teams, and increasingly, by flexible team-like entities.

Leadership is not about titles, status and power over people. Leaders are people who hold themselves accountable for recognising the potential in people and ideas and developing that potential. This is an audiobook for everyone who is ready to choose courage over comfort, make a difference and lead. When we dare to lead, we don't pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don't see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it and work to align authority and accountability.

When Gene Sperling was in charge of coordinating economic policy in the Obama White House, he found himself surprised when serious people in Washington told him that the Obama focus on healthcare was a distraction because it was “not focused on the economy.” How, he asked, was the fear felt by millions of Americans of being one serious illness away from financial ruin not considered an economic issue? Too often, Sperling found that we measured economic success by metrics like GDP.

Summary
By 2030, the world will be short of approximately 15 million health workers - a fifth of the workforce needed to keep healthcare systems going. Global healthcare leader and award-winning author, Dr. Mark Britnell, uses his unique insights from advising governments, executives, and clinicians in more than 70 countries to present solutions to this impending crisis.
Human: Solving the Global Workforce Crisis in Healthcare calls for a reframing of the global debate about health and national wealth, and invites us to deal with this problem in new and adaptive ways that drive economic and human prosperity. Harnessing technology, it asks us to reimagine new models of care and levels of workforce agility.
Drawing on experiences ranging from the world's most advanced hospitals to revolutionary new approaches in India and Africa, Dr. Mark Britnell makes it clear what works - and what does not. Short and concise, this book gives a truly global perspective on the fundamental workforce issues facing health systems today.

Interesting Observations, Few Solutiins
The authors global experience makes this a good primer for health care policy. However the lack of focus compromises its ability to present useful solutions.
