Summary

What is the connection between crawling through a jungle and your ‘to do’ list? What can ejecting out of a stealth bomber teach you about the importance of thinking the worst? What can surviving in extreme situations teach us about surviving everyday life?

John Hudson, chief survival instructor to the British military, knows what it takes to survive. Combining firsthand experience with 20 years of studying the choices people have made under the most extreme pressure, How to Survive is a lifetime’s worth of wisdom about how to apply the principles of survival to everyday life. The cornerstone of military survival (surviving anything) is understanding the relationship between effort, hope and goals - a mind-set that can be transposed anytime, anywhere. In How to Survive you will learn how this template for survival can be applied to any situation in your everyday life.

Through gripping firsthand accounts of near disaster and survival stories from across the extreme world, you will learn that by following these principles you can develop the mind-set that will allow you to make better decisions under pressure, which are as equally applicable to first dates and presentations as to climbing Everest and getting lost at sea.

Absolutely Brilliant

Even as I was listening to the first few chapters I was putting plans into place to use this brilliant book to make me more productive in all aspects of my life.
This book is full of inspiring stories, but John’s brilliance is where he has dissected them and told us how we can easily use the skills in every day life!
Without wishing to sound cliché this book will change how I run many aspects of my life!
Fantastically read by the author.
I have no intention of living off monkeys bums!

Mega!!

Amazing tales of survival and hardship in some of the most extreme environments as well as help, information, tips and pointers of how the knowledge gained in a survival situation can be used in managing our every day lives. I wouldn't categorise it as a self help book as such but it certainly has an element of that. Overall really well read. Sometimes when the authors choose to read the book instead of opting for a professional narrator it goes tits up and it's a struggle to listen to an otherwise brilliant book...not this time. John comes across well in this audiobook. would love him write a more biographical book. Think that would be Awesome.

excellent

The book also discusses how to apply the survival principles in mundane life as well as emergency situations and alot more.. it also covers true survival stories that went wrong & right. The way this book is narrated * is clever * it is done in a way to break down the information as stories, so it sinks in. Very entertaining.

Entertaining and informative

This is an interesting book although I think it may work better in print than the audio version. I enjoyed the scenarios the author describes and some of the ‘real world’ lessons we can take from survival stories. The story is clearly delivered so overall, well worth a listen.

A refreshing perspective on surviving emergencies and the grind of modern life.

There’s a lot to learn here from one of the world’s leading experts in survival, evasion, resistance and escape. Combining practical advice with fascinating case studies and cutting edge psychology, John Hudson has written an engaging book that stresses the importance of what’s between you ears, over the gadgets in your rucksack or the apps on your phone. A great listen that left me craving the outdoors and a nice hot brew.

An outstanding book that has something for everyon

A book that can link Robinson Crusoe to office politics has got to be interesting and “How to Survive” by John Hudson is that and more. This book combines survival, adventure, psychology, practical life advice and even solves a mystery, all in one thoroughly enjoyable package. The pace and style are fantastic with subtle humour all the way through.

John Hudson takes peoples experiences of extreme survival (which in their own right are fascinating) and unpacks the key elements of what worked (or didn’t). These skills are then translated into bite sized ways we can use them in our everyday lives.

There is something for everyone here; whether it’s an interest in survival and the extremes of human endurance, a desire to know how our minds work or just seeking little hacks to make our daily lives easier. I can’t recommend “How to Survive” highly enough.
