Story
Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

Story
Some people are born lucky. Then there’s me, destined to be loved by the man who knows my darkest secret. My gift has followed me my entire life—the ability to see the threads of fate. I can see the red thread tying together two people destined to love one another. But my gift has another side to it. A darker side. I can also see a simple black thread tied to the fingers of those who aren’t aware of it, connecting them to the person destined to kill them. And when I look down at my own finger, I can see the red thread stretched over to Bishop King.

Story
My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

When I gave up life as a hitman, I thought everything was going to be better. I was going to become a PI, help people, and live normally…and then I met Jeremy, the most perfect man to have ever saved my life (I mean, he might be the only one who has saved my life, but he’s still the best at it). From that point on, it was all over for me - I knew we were meant to be. The issue is that he doesn’t…quite seem to realize that. But when he’s targeted by criminals (literally, someone just shot at his head), he needs to rely on someone, so why not me?

Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense.

“You are the savior of mankind” are the last words I ever expected to hear while nibbling on fries. The thing is, I’m not mankind saving material. I don’t even have magic (and just found out it exists). I’m the most boring, normal(ish) human ever. Suddenly, I’m being tossed right into the middle of a fight that started years before I was even born, and then I get partnered up with Alastair, a quirky magical Guardian. He is rather attractive and sweet when he’s not into the whole “woe is me, I can’t let myself fall in love with you” nonsense.

After half a century of chaos, my retirement from leading the Community of Species Government has been bliss. No more hellhounds playing pranks. No more snippy demons demanding my attention. No more cajoling money from the wealthy to support the community. Just peace while I avoid my overbearing father and try to work out my next steps. Although...maybe three years of peace is enough. It might even be starting to get boring. In fact, an adolescent dragon crash-landing on my landlord's shed is just the kind of excitement I need - especially when he brings his species leader to my door.

Summary
River
When I meet Bentley DeGray, I’m at the lowest point in my life because no matter how much I fight, my past won’t let me escape. Bentley makes me laugh and care and love, but what does any of that mean when I’m living a lie?
Things get complicated when I find out he’s with the Vampire Related Crimes Unit, the organization looking for answers about the abductions of prominent vampires.
The same organization that stands in my way.
My time is ticking down while I’m wound up in this role I’ve been forced to play, but I know that I would be drowning without Bentley by my side.
Bentley
We’re facing something that runs so deep that we don’t know who we can trust besides each other, even within the VRC. River makes me feel like every day is worth living and enjoying - like I’m not so alone. I can’t imagine life without him. But I know that if I want to keep him by my side, I will need to do everything I can to help him so our love doesn’t get cut short before it can truly grow.
How to Save a Human contains a cat who shows her affection by not drawing (much) blood, art projects that are a little...sketchy, the most underwhelming “bull” ride ever, and vampires that may or may not be in the mob.

i want more books
It's review time 🎧
Warning ⚠️: mm romance, fantasy, vampires, police story, medical trigger, abuse, comedy, part of a series, can be read as a standalone but not recommended, because of the time line of this book you'll discover things about the other characters from other books.
Narrator score🎧 ; Michael Ferraiuolo is a freaking artist , he did an outstanding job with this book (not a surprise really) and what I really loved about the preference that he gave the book another rhythm it was a bit slower than the usual comedies he preformed and it only shows how much he understands his work.
Level of steam🔥: ad always the did isn't what's important in Alice's books.... and when it came it was sweet and very fitting for the story...
Level of anxiety and sadness0😱😢: well... I cried i actually did cry 3 times if I recall correctly! It wasn't a heavy book, it was still a comedy so don't worry about it.... but yeah the story had his dramatic effect for sure.... and I don't think it's the usual comedies she does.... the banter is here.... the story is here... but I think the fact that those characters are somehow normal compared to others... and the fact that the background story is a bit more difficult... makes the feeling run high. But yet again it's still Alice winters and it is still a comedy that I adored.
The book itself📖: well. I think it is the last book in this series (maybe I'm wrong, I wish I'm I just loved it so much.)
And I think that the is brilliant. I loved River he is a funny, sweet, strong and very innocent character on his own whey... and Bentley just stole my heart. I adore his kindness his way of viewing the world..... and I adore the crazy cat 🤣🤣🤣 it was just a sweet book, with a crazy background story and the best characters ever.

Not as funny but still good
I became a little spoiled by Alice's other books that made me laugh out loud. This one didn't. The story was good and is told in two separate time frames. One is early in the series and the other would be book 4. Michael Ferraluolo did his usual excellent job performing the story. He's one of my favorite readers.

Book 5? Anyone?
So, I'm not sure if there will be a book five for tgis series. I mean ai kind of want to see that special agent find someone to love, but at the same time wasn't their captian dirty as well? I feel like that happened in the last book. Also didn't Degray go to jail, because he was the one who was leaking info to the crazy bastard vamp that totured Fin? Maybe all that was a fever dream I'm not sure. Well anyways great read as always.

Great story and so fun!
Oh my gosh, I thought Finn was a hoot but River is hilarious. I don't know how many times I laughed out loud. Bentley is sweet and would do anything to keep River smiling. The storyline kept me engaged and there were plenty of twists and surprises. I enjoyed the interaction with the other members of the VRC and just loved Banshee. Michael Ferraiuolo did an amazing job. You could really tell the difference between each character's voice and personality. I really liked the added sound affects in one particular scene (no spoilers!).

Review of How … Human
Overall this book was a good read, but the timber and cadence of the narrators voice is a little irritating at first. However, I did get used to it later in the book and he began to differentiate his voice for the characters. I would recommend reading the first three books in this series to prepare for some of the characters in this book #4.

Nothing like the first three books
I LOVE the first three books in the VRC series but this one bored me. It honestly felt like it was written by someone else. I didn't feel the chemistry between characters, there was little to none of Alice Winter’s signature humor, and the plot just didn't line up to me. Also, the voices the narrator gave each of them was too similar and it was confusing at times. Overall, I did not enjoy it. I will relisten to the first three over and over (they are in my top five fav MM series) but will not be relistening to this book.
