About this listen

These witches put the mental in elemental....

Fire witch Kenna Byrne has a lot on her hot plate. As the tourism director for Eternal Springs, she's organizing the first annual Battle of the Bands competition. When the drummer of the favored band ends up dead, overachiever Kenna is determined to solve the murder in order to save her event. Throw in a gorgeous pilot, a flying-monkey problem, and an elusive Waffle Wagon, and Kenna is ready to burn more than bridges.

Can this elemental witch save the day, or will her whole life go up in flames?

Gack!

It's one of THOSE series - four main characters, so they each get a book where the Exact Same Thing HAS to happen to each of them in turn - {YAAAAAAAWN!}

The formula runs thus:

One of them (Our Heroine)
- Finds a body,
- Meets an UNBELIEVABLY HOT MAN (not just a nice guy who's not particularly good looking. No, he HAS to be UNBELIEVABLY HOT),
- An an incursion of Evil Magical Nasties from The Other Side crops up to distract from the murder investigation...
- Our Heroine and UNBELIEVABLY HOT MAN clumsily dance around each other creating an atmosphere of cloyingly mounting romantic tension.
- Witchy Mentor contacts Heroine and is Bossily Bitchy to her (and, of course, none of them stand up to their Witchy Mentors)
- Incursion of Evil Magical Nasties dealt with and returned from whence they came
- Murder is solved - Dramatic Scene, Our Heronine inadvertently puts herself in danger (as I haven't actually listened to the end of this one, that may not actually be the case here, but I'm betting it is)
- Cloying Romance with UNBELIEVABLY HOT man becomes a done deal because they are Meant For Each Other.
- Rewind Formulaic Plot Outline, Slot in names of next Herone, UBELIEVABLY HOT GUY, Murder Victim, Evil Magical Nasties, Bitchy Witchy Mentor, and Murderer and prepare for next in series....

The repetition of the formulaic plot outline from the previous two books is SO yawningly obvious, and the cloying Romance element overwealms the Mystery element to such an extent that the overall story is spoiled.

Does the romance have to be so FORCED in these books. Could it not, be a subtle minor thread in the story? Is it too much to hope for that the promising (if cloyingly written) romance could fail, and the characters decided they aren't destined for each other after all....?

Sadly, yes, it is probably too much to hope for.
