Earl Swagger is tough as hell. But even tough guys have their secrets. Plagued by the memory of his abusive father, apprehensive about his own impending parenthood, Earl is a decorated ex-Marine of absolute integrity — and overwhelming melancholy. Now he’s about to face his biggest, bloodiest challenge yet. It is the summer of 1946, organized crime’s garish golden age, when American justice seems to have gone to seed for good. Nowhere is this more true than in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the reigning capital of corruption. When the district attorney vows to bring down the mob, Earl is recruited to run the show. As casino raids erupt into nerve-shattering combat amid screaming prostitutes and fleeing johns, the body count mounts — along with the suspense.

To my British ears, the narrator brought the 1940s American South alive. The distinct difference in accents and dialects by the narrator felt like I was listening to a play with several narrators instead of just the one. Earl and Bobby Lee - fantastic creations.

A brilliant storyline with great narration.

I loved this tale that romps along at a cracking pace.

The narration is excellent (with one exception) and the characters leap out fully formed and painted vividly.

Unfortunately, the Irish accent of Johnny leaves quite a bit to be desired. To this Brit, it was a bit painful on the ears lurching from broken Scottish with an occasional London twang and a smattering of Irish.

Put that small matter aside and you will probably love this production!

What a ripper!

Awesome story, narrated superbly. Sucks you into the characters into a crescendo of a showdown 👍

Bloody great novel

Having listened to, and enjoyed many of the Bob Lee series, I looked forward to this. I loved the way Mr. Hunter weaved actual gangster figures into the storyline. The story is fast paced, immersive and, to use a British word, 'moreish'.

I heartily recommend this Audible book. The narrator does a wonderful job.

Absolutely brilliant!

No one does old timey moral rectitude quite like Stephen Hunter. Few thriller writers have as sure a control of pace & plot either. Hot Springs is no exception in which avenging angel, ex marine Earl Swagger gets to take on gangsters, crooked cops and his own demons to clean up Dodge. This is a great story, fast moving and gripping with the author’s usual, meticulous grasp of weaponry and why it matters. Just one quibble. The author puts a lot of effort into creating his characters and few more important here than a cold blooded, stone-hearted killer from Ireland whose very presence is supposed to scare the bejaysus out of you. Which, on the page, he might well do. In the Audible version - in an otherwise terrific narration - he sounds more like Groundskeeper Willie and the effect is lost.

Great yarn
