Story
Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones) reads chilling tales by the unsung master of the classic ghost story: E. F. Benson. There's nothing sinister about a London bus. Nothing supernatural could occur on a busy train platform. There's nothing terrifying about a little caterpillar. And a telephone, what could be scary about that? Don't be frightened of the dark corners of your room. Don't be alarmed by a sudden inexplicable chill.

Stories of darkness and death, myth and madness. Stories to unsettle and horrify.

A dinner party is held in the penthouse of a multimillion-pound development. All the guests are strangers - even to their host, the billionaire owner of the building. None of them know why they were selected to receive his invitation. Besides a postcode, they share only one thing in common - they've all experienced an unsettling occurrence within the building's walls. By the end of the night, their host is dead, and none of the guests will say what happened. His death remains one of the biggest unsolved mysteries - until now.

Ten extraordinary tales of terror, penned by the prolific horror masters of old, from Lovecraft's relentless "Rats in the Walls" and the view from Saki's "Open Window", to the guilt of Poe's "Tell-Tale Heart" and the ghostly musings on greed of Wharton's "Afterward".
Narrated by Ian Gordon & Jennifer Gill of HorrorBabble.

A most worthy offering
Would you consider the audio edition of HorrorBabble's Classic Horror: Volume 1 to be better than the print version?
I have read enough of the stories Mr. Gordon and Ms. Gill have done readings of, and I trust their felicity to the source material.
What other book might you compare HorrorBabble's Classic Horror: Volume 1 to and why?
Being a compilation of disparate classic horror stories, there is little comparison I can make.
Which character – as performed by Jennifer Gill and Ian Gordon – was your favorite?
The protagonist of The Tell-Tale Heart, voiced by Mr. Gordon, was suitably unhinged.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Here and there, yes.
Any additional comments?
The only fault I can find in this and their other compilation is the lack of story titles in the chapter listing.

High quality readings of these classic stories
Most people are familiar with the famous authors whose works of horror appear in this collection. Their stories are undeniably classics, and as such it is the quality of the narration that tends to become the prime factor in deciding whether to buy an audiobook of them. Well, I can definitely say you need look no further if you want professional and enthralling readings of these terrifying tales. Ian and Jennifer's eloquent vocal performances draw you in to the suspense and mystery of the works, making them seem fresh even if you've read or heard them before. I highly recommend this audiobook!

Stories aren't wine; they shouldn't be dry.
The title sums it up very nicely. These are classic horror stories read by the talented Mr. Gordon and Ms. Gill. They typically read in a dramatic rather than arid style, which I for one appreciate deeply. Their interpretation exhibits their own passion, stays faithful to the original work, and streamlines what otherwise might have been a relatively laborious read.

A gift for classic horror lovers. Love these narrators! Excellent readings, good variety of classic stories, and the production is on point. I know H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe inside and out, but the other works were new to me. Hopefully we get a volume two. Highly recommended!

Narration leaves a lot to be desired
The narration sounded unprofessionally done, there is a certain echo which is not present in most other audiobooks. This aside, Gordon’s narration was fine. Gill’s narration was too distracting to continue, ruining what are otherwise great short stories. Her pacing is totally off, is offputting, and is entirely out of relation - placing emphasis in the wrong spots! - to the story line. It is both unusual and unfortunate that prior reviews (obviously friendly reviewers) don’t mention either circumstance, the odd lack of quality around the recording, and the stilted, oddly paced, undesirable nature of Gill’s performance. I always listen to narration before purchasing/or using a credit to pick up an audiobook. Unfortunately in the circumstance the sample only provides Gordon’s narration, and his was fine. But I am unable to continue with the narration performance done by Jennifer Gill.
