Summary
When the victim seems perfect, is it the perfect crime? The gripping new serial killer thriller from the runaway best-selling author of Cry Baby.
On a bitterly cold winter's night, Liverpool is left stunned by a brutal murder in the grounds of the city's Anglican Cathedral. A killer is on the loose, driven by a chilling rage.
Put on the case, DS Nathan Cody is quickly stumped. Wherever he digs, the victim seems to be almost angelic - no one has a bad word to say, let alone a motive for such a violent murder.
And Cody has other things on his mind, too. The ghosts of his past are coming ever closer, and - still bearing the physical and mental scars - it's all he can do to hold on to his sanity.
And then the killer strikes again....

Couldn't stop listening!
I really enjoyed the first Nathan Cody book and loved this one. Funny, witty, thrilling and scary, with a nice friendship love story thrown in ... not forgetting the brilliant narration and characterisation. Can't wait for book 3.

it's just ok really...
...I'm not a big fan of the narrator and coming from Liverpool I was hoping I'd appreciate the local landmarks etc, but in actual fact they just diminished the story. I listened to the book before this as well but this series sadly aren't for me, too much about his relationship with webley and this own demons. you'd be better off with Stuart McBride's Logan McRae books really

Bit too angst-ridden and melodramatic for me
David Jackson is such a brilliant writer but ...
I found Cody's personal issues to be rather repetitive (dare I say even a bit boring, poor chap) but his situation is probably going to be strung out over as many books as possible without resolution ... he's an interesting character overall but apart from DCI Blunt all the female characters seem total pains - the otherwise excellent narrator gives Megan a particularly nasty irritating girly whiny voice and that new woman is annoyingly wimpy yet rather sinister ... the story was OK'ish but a bit OTT and the perpetrator wasn't a huge surprise ...
Now for Book 3 ...

Empathy with a killer
I didn't listen to the books in chronological order, but that doesn't really matter. All three can well be read/listened to as stand-alones--although I would recommend them all.
From the three audiobooks, I think I liked this one best --maybe because of the way we were introduced into the brain of the killer right from the start.
What all three books have in common, is, that they aren't black and white.
True, the killers commit monstrous crimes, and yet we get to know why they do it. In this particular book I actually pitied the killer.
Cody is struggling with his own psyche, and so his relation to Megan Webley is fraught with misunderstandings.
The characters are great, all of them.
Jonathan Keeble did another great job at narrating the story. It is NOT a story I'd recommend to listen to right before going to sleep, because you'll just be sleepless as a result.
I do hope there'll be more in this series.
