Summary

Her devastating marriage behind her, Raylene Hammond is truly thankful for her best friends, the Sweet Magnolias. They’ve taken her in, shielding her from the world. Then she meets sheriff’s deputy Carter Rollins, and suddenly Raylene’s haven no longer feels quite so safe.

Carter understands why Raylene is trapped inside. He’s even taken to bringing the outside world to her. But with two kid sisters to raise, just how much time can he devote to this woman who’s stolen his heart?

Raylene knows Carter is a man worth loving, but she may never be strong enough to accept what he’s offering. How long can she ask him to wait? Maybe they’ll never have more than this one sweet summer.

Savor more Sweet Magnolias.

Annoying voice

Some of the voices the reader did were horrible and annoying. When she reads with her normal voice it was great but some of the voices she put on for different characters were horrible and I had to skip over those parts. Lucky most of those characters with annoying voices weren’t main characters.

Good story, horrible narrator!

Where does Honeysuckle Summer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have many audiobooks and this rates mid way through all of them.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoy the connection of a group of women and their friendship over time.

Would you be willing to try another one of Mary Robinette Kowal’s performances?

I would prefer not to. I have all the books in this series , so I've listened to more of her than I care for. I can usually blank out the narrator if necessary and just go with the story, but I found myself thinking "This is really awful". She's okay when just reading but lousy at the voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really.

Cookie cutter plot

As I have listened to almost all of the books by Woods, this one was, by far, the hardest to complete. The plot is the same as every other book, but you do get to feeling like the characters are friends so you contours listen.
The performance was, however, very trying. As a lifelong Southern woman. I know of few people who speak like the characters in this series 2010 books. The fake accent was demeaning and stereotypical of how “ignorant “ southerners are perceived by the media. Hollywood and belt line elites. I think there is one more book to this Serenity grouping but I am not sure I am up to it.

Not as good as it could be...

First of all I love Sherryl and I have had a fun time with the Sweet Magnolias. I was waiting for this story. I thought it had everything to be a great one but it just dragged itself. I had such high expectations for this couple and overall they are a good one but... I don’t know exactly what it was that annoyed me the most: bringing back anorexia as a teen issue when there are so many other issues that could be explored, the sainthood of Carter or the fact that Paul appears and everything is solved in 5 min. Well, i will continue with the series but I sincerely hope the next one to be better.

The narrator ruined it for me!

I enjoyed the story line but I couldn’t finish the book because of the narrator. Very disappointing.

Terrible narration

The story itself is good but the phony southern accents are horrible and irritating. If I didn't want to hear the rest of the story I'd cancel it. The first of the Sherryl Woods that I've encountered this. I've always loved them before.
