Hard truths
Steps insightfully from character to character, leading us with them as they spiral into the mire. Nothing vanilla or sweet about this story, it leaves a mark that is sharp and lasting.

If it were available I'd have given this 2.5 stars. I didn't love it but didn't hate it either. Tania Rodrigues narration was excellent. At times the writing style felt too much like YA for me. The ending took me by surprise. I think that off the back of this that I might look for some memoir about the experience of the B.A.M.E. community in the U.K. The ending really surprised me. It was a difficult listen.

Left me breathless
Kamila Shamsie's heart breaking story tells us so much about the damage caused by jihadis, both by their repulsive existence and the global political and social response to it. But it really spoke to me as a story about grief, the depths of it and its affect on our humanity. A tense, moving and well-paced novel, and I highly recommend it.

An unlikely tale of headline stories
If you were to take all the headlines relating to extremist and minority groups and put them into one story, this would be the result. It felt to me that the author had a lot to say about how Islamaphobia affects ordinary people and the potential consequences of stereotyping and political correctness. As each of these is a huge subject on its own, I felt that they were rather trivialised by putting them into one story. The coincidence of a (rather secular) Muslim Home Secretary being appointed and making controversial decisions was interesting though the chance of his (privileged) son becoming involved with extremists was a bit of a leap. Sorry if this is a spoiler...

Gripping
Could have easily sat and listen to this book in one sitting. Absolutely gripping and engrossing. Each character fully rounded and defined.

Just brilliant!
That’s all I can say. Just brilliant. I went out for an hour’s walk as I was beginning to get to the end .... but in the end kept going for 10 miles, because I couldn’t stop listening.

Disappointing
The book has been much talked about and praised. I'm disappointed. Some sections are very mundane and the characters fail to engage me. Attempts to reflect the ancient Greek tragedies do not convince.
