Summary
Detective Chief Inspector Ryan retreats to Holy Island seeking sanctuary when he is forced to take sabbatical leave from his duties as a homicide detective. A few days before Christmas, his peace is shattered, and he is thrust back into the murky world of murder when a young woman is found dead amongst the ancient ruins of the nearby priory.
When former local girl Dr. Anna Taylor arrives back on the island as a police consultant, old memories swim to the surface, making her confront her difficult past. She and Ryan struggle to work together to hunt a killer who hides in plain sight while pagan ritual and small-town politics muddy the waters of their investigation.
Murder and mystery are peppered with a sprinkling of romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit set on the spectacular Northumbrian island of Lindisfarne, cut off from the English mainland by a tidal causeway.

Persevere with series. Books get better.
I’ve listened to books out of order and glad I have. If I’d heard this one first then I would not have listened to another. Story was ridiculous and the romantic element was more Mills and Boon than thriller. Persevere because the books get better and the romance is dialled down a lot. Narrator is excellent.

Good, but could be better
I wish LJ Ross wasn’t quite so in love with Maxamillian Ryan. I got that he is six two and God’s gift in the looks department with thick black hair long enough to push his fingers through and grey eyes, so I don’t need beating about the head with it. And I prefer to infer these facts.
The fact that a mini hurts his back tells me he is tall. Pushing black hair out of his eyes tells me it is rather long and it’s colour. And there are ways of letting me know he is good looking without having every woman in the book drool over him. No one is that good, and modern woman don’t always trust a handsome face; we have all been around the block somewhat and can be discerning.
On top of that, there were definitely times when I thought, hang on a minute. Ryan sends for the troops after a hysterical mature woman knocks on his door without bothering to check there actually is a body. How does he know last night’s casserole didn’t have iffy mushrooms in it and she is hallucinating? After what comes next, that could have been more than likely!
And how did he possibly break down a door to the extent it came right off its hinges (locks tend to be fragile; hinges incredibly tough) and then, without securing the door, manage in a village packed with Nosy Parker’s and crawling with his own police, find time for a serious bout of seduction? No way. And in December? Up North? Important parts might have broken off with the cold.
Most decent publishers have seriously skilled and experienced editors to filter out such clangers. LJ Ross is good enough to deserve that kind of professional support. With it, she could be more than good, her books could be really really good.

DCI Ryan iIs The Man For Me
I really enjoyed this book, having visited Holy Island myself, I could picture it in my mind. Loved the twists in the story, and the narrator was so good, the rich vocal tones, and accents made the story for me.

Long and rambling at times
I’m starting the LJ Ross books from the very beginning after listening to, and really enjoying, The Infirmary.
I found this difficult to listen to, unfortunately I couldn’t gel with the narrators voice and so firstly getting through the full book was a struggle.
I didn’t find the story gripped me much but I ploughed on. By the end I was glad i’d finished it; I felt like the entire story could have been done and dusted in half the time and a lot of the extra bumf didn’t add anything to the story.
Disappointed in this one sadly, and wont listen to others with the same narrator.

Pagan Rituals on Holy Island
Ryan was a likeable character. Anna, I felt was not used to her full capacity. Her knowledge of history etc should have been used more.
Story was good if a little predictable in places. I guessed that the new leader of the group was involved in his introduction to the story.
Ending left open for presumably more development in other books to follow.

worth an early night and a six hour listen
great loved the characters and they seemed real, loved that it picked up the pieces and explained them, having been to Lindisfarne it came alive for me. ( I might be wary about another visit unless the next books solve it) i am glad the beginning of book two was on the end of the book one- it saved me getting out of bed to order the next one straight away. loved the reader and his accents too. all round good listen.
