Summary

Detective Chief Inspector Ryan retreats to Holy Island seeking sanctuary when he is forced to take sabbatical leave from his duties as a homicide detective. A few days before Christmas, his peace is shattered, and he is thrust back into the murky world of murder when a young woman is found dead amongst the ancient ruins of the nearby priory.

When former local girl Dr. Anna Taylor arrives back on the island as a police consultant, old memories swim to the surface, making her confront her difficult past. She and Ryan struggle to work together to hunt a killer who hides in plain sight while pagan ritual and small-town politics muddy the waters of their investigation.

Murder and mystery are peppered with a sprinkling of romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit set on the spectacular Northumbrian island of Lindisfarne, cut off from the English mainland by a tidal causeway.

Holy Island ? - more like Wholly Misleading

What did you like best about Holy Island? What did you like least?

Narration is very good, but this is not detective fiction - this is Mills and Boon pap. I persevered, but just ran out of patience. The author is so in love with his/her lead, it is creepily incestuous.

Would you ever listen to anything by LJ Ross again?

Probably not

What does Jonathan Keeble bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

An extra hundred or so pages - I doubt I would have got past page 10 of the book.

Could you see Holy Island being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Hopefully not.

Any additional comments?

This book has been written to a checklist combining traditional detective fiction and romantic fiction, and unfortunately falls between two stools.

Audible - I think you do your customers a disservice suggesting this pap to those of us that read proper detective fiction from Ian Rankin and his ilk - If I were Ian Rankin I would also be insulted that any "because you enjoyed Rebus, try this" comparison were made to this mediocrity.

Very odd

The love story element is very odd. Seems adolescent in its thinking and frankly a bit weird

Absurd and pathetic

Midsummer Murder‘s meets Rosamunde Pilcher (apologies, as Rosamunde Pilcher‘s stories develop profund characters and topics).
If I would not have always the ambition to read (listen to) a book until its last line, I would have stopped mid-story. But, there was hope it would improve. An absurd story with characters leading a double life which is disclosed only on the last page, hurray the killer is ….
On the other hand the hero (DCI Ryan) and the heroine (Dr. Anna Walker) to good, beautiful, intelligent etc to be true and falling in love on first (or let’s say second) sight and have a connection deep and mature which at least would need a couple of months instead only hours.

Love the place but not the people

You have to suspend your capacity for disbelief in most detective stories and this is no exception. There is an unevenness about this novel that appears at every turn. The characters are two dimensional - the perfect detective, absolutely gorgeous, highly intelligent, haunted by his past. The beautiful, highly intelligent woman who is much too high spirited to listen to sensible advice, also haunted by her past. The dialogue is excruciating at times and as for the moment when he 'plundered her lips' - well words escape me! The narrator always sounds like a man even when he is being a woman. I recommend that he takes a master class from Juliet Stephenson in dealing with characters of the opposite sex. The accents made me snigger.
However, LJ Ross does the places justice and she keeps the action going so in spite of myself I am listening to the next in the series but it's curiosity rather than anything else that has kept me going.

Not sure

The audio is slightly different from the book, there are changed locations, some extra bits and also some missing bits leaving me a Little confused as I try to read along using both versions, being dislexic I use the audio version to help me read books.

Great read

One of the best books I have listened to although I found I had to concentrate as I had to re listen to some parts as there was so much going on a good murder mystery.
