Summary

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was the surprise best seller of 2011—an unprecedented mix of YA fantasy and vintage photography that enthralled audiences and critics alike. Publishers Weekly called it "an enjoyable, eccentric read, distinguished by well-developed characters, a believable Welsh setting, and some very creepy monsters."

This second novel begins in 1940, immediately after the first book ended. Having escaped Miss Peregrine's island by the skin of their teeth, Jacob and his new friends must journey to London, the peculiar capital of the world. Along the way, they encounter new allies, a menagerie of peculiar animals, and other surprises.

Complete with dozens of newly discovered (and thoroughly creepy) vintage photographs, this new adventure will delight fantasy fans of all ages.

Critic reviews

"[Heyborne] moves masterfully among the large cast of characters, creating distinct British voices for each of Jacob's peculiar friends. Heyborne's sense of timing, evident pleasure in the material, and ability to thrillingly execute the book's many dramatic moments will keep listeners riveted." (AudioFile)

an amazing story and a superb performance

I think this book is even better than the first one and the performance is so much better. nail biting stuff and so beautifully crafted.

Love it!

Love it! On my second listen of this, I do find there's lots happening in this serious and I forgot a lot by the time I'd finished the 3rd book which is why I'm listening again but i quite like that. Always notice more the second time round, also I like how we get to hear Jacobs thoughts about situations. I do find it a bit difficult to keep track of who's, who somtimes.
I love Emma In all the books her characters amazing! Also I love how different all the characters are. And they bring somthing different to the story! Also like the small bits of humour from the children.
This series has became one of my favourites I find it really original and different! Hope the films will do them justice!

Millard is the best.

I love the part when Millard meets the boy at the carnival who is only just starting to turn invisible and spends the whole night talking with him and his parents.

Kirby's screaming and shouting grated a bit.

An excellent book, & great reading marred only by…

Another super story from Ransom Riggs & the reader gave what is overall a very good performance that was very well produced. But Kirby Heyborne is in DESPERATE need of time with English speakers FROM THE UK. The polish his performance could gain could be game changing.
I didn’t know that the “uncanny valley” label used for visual fx could be applicable to voice work, but repeatedly made me wince during this book.
Odd words mispronounced, or vowels that were massively over-drawn shatter the illusion crafted by Kirby Heyborne’s otherwise excellent reading.
Absolutely forgivable tho, unlike the use of words like “sidewalk”, or “subway”. If the book is set in England and Wales, and the characters speaking are native, how blood likely is it that they’ll use foreign names for things?
I’ll still recommend this audiobook to my friends, but with the above caveats.

Such a relief after first book's narrator

A great continuation of this story. Very well written and well read too. The narrator of the first book was awful and the accents were painful, but this one was much better and his English and Scottish accents were passable and more than acceptable to my English ear. Bravo, onto the next.

You Just Can't Leave It Like That!?

Would you listen to Hollow City again? Why?

Yes, just because. It's Ransom Riggs... need I say more?

What other book might you compare Hollow City to, and why?

It's in a class of it's own. Read the first book first though.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

When the children were in the boats at the beginning and one is secured to a pole and acting as a lookout for shore.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and I did.
