About this listen

From the best-selling author of All Is Not Forgotten and Don’t Look for Me comes a sharp, compulsive thriller about a young woman who narrowly escapes a violent crime and the psychiatrist helping to recover her memory of the suspect.

Gabby Ashford has just survived an attempt on her life. Detectives have connected her story to two other cases in the area: Professional women drugged at a bar, brought to their homes, and drowned in their bathtubs. Gabby, who miraculously woke up in her own bathtub unharmed, could be the key to finding a serial killer on the loose - but she has no memory of the attack.

Gabby admits herself to a high-end rehabilitation center to recover and to seek the help of a psychiatrist renowned for his work with memory recovery. As Dr. Forrester works with Gabby - interviewing not only her but her overbearing fiancée, her emotionally fragile brother, and the local detective working the case - questions about Gabby’s story, her past, and the ethics of memory recovery emerge.

Dr. Forrester, the central voice of Walker’s breakout debut All Is Not Forgotten, is a fascinating and deeply complicated character, barreling toward the truth of the case at hand while wrestling with the demons of his own past. Shocking and succinct, Hold Your Breath will have you on the edge of your seat from the first minute to the last.

I didn't feel like a short book like this would be able to pull me in, but it did. And for once, a book with s twist I didn't see coming! The downside is how very slowly the narrator reads (but 1.7x speed fixed that).

Surprisingly great

Great characters and excellent narration. Gripping and easy to follow. I will be listening to this many times.

On the one hand, this is a relatively good crime thriller with a small but satisfying twist which drives the narrative. But on the other hand, this novella is full of appropriate social commentary. It basically described my life relating to the struggles with overwhelming anxiety, triggers and memories and the agonising divorce process. If you are into psychology, I would highly recommend this. If you're not, I would still recommend this.

Absolutely stunning!

Liked the readers voice, but lost me from chapter 2. Ok for free, but not a paid for

Not a lot

Even though this was quite short I found I wasn’t that invested in the story and sort of just wanted to rush though it to find out the ending. It’s okay was a free listen

This is a great story if you can get past the 2nd chapter when the reader meets the doctor. This section read like a “teach yourself psychiatry” manual and I nearly gave up but because I loved American Girl so much, I forced myself to continue. After this, the real story got going and it became everything I’d hoped. Fast forward the psych manual (should have been vastly edited) and you’ll be glad you did!

Great story by a fab author
