Story
Grieving after a huge personal tragedy, Detective Superintendent Henry Christie is trying to pull his life back together and thinking seriously about retirement - after all, he’s got the time in and he’d have a good life and decent pension. But all thoughts of a peaceful dotage are shattered when the phone rings in the early hours, and he is called out to investigate the brutal rape and murder of a teenage girl.
Summary
When everyone’s outside the law, the one who blinks first loses
Detective Inspector Stella Cole has only one case: to find - and kill - the remaining members of a legal conspiracy who turned her world into ashes.
But their leader, Adam Collier, is her boss. And he’s pulling in friends from the underworld to take the fight to Stella. Chief among them an Albanian drug lord nicknamed The Shark.
Regrouping in Spain, Stella makes contact with an old adversary. A retired gangster named Ronnie “The Razor” Wilks. He proposes a deal that tests Stella’s resolve to the limit.
The only problem? Stella is losing her mind to a second, unrelentingly brutal version of herself she’s dubbed “Other Stella”. As the violence escalates, the question is, which one will win?
A visceral, psychological crime thriller...
Hit Back Harder picks up where the first book in the series, Hit and Run, left off. Stella has already shot and killed a High Court judge. But will she have the skills and the survival instincts to fight off the ruthless killers on her tail?
Expect a rising body count and corrupt deals between people who are morally compromised.
...for listeners who like the dark side.
Fans of Kathy Reichs, Karin Slaughter, Tess Gerritsen, Henning Mankell, Jo Nesbo, Jeffery Deaver, and Ian Rankin will love Stella Cole.

For me A Step Too Far
I enjoyed the first in series, but for me this damaged, split-personality theme, as developed further in part 2; and at times the rather laboured performance reading, both took it too far.

Fantastic story
I loved ''Hit and Run'' and this one is even better, outstandingly so, made even better by the fact that there will be a third book (well there already is, which I just checked out but not in audio at the moment).
The only downside of this book is the narrator, who is great in some ways, but still on a learning curve I think, she makes some dreadful mispronunciations, my favourite in this book being 'artisanal' followed by the ever popular 'cadaver' but Helen is pleasant to listen to when she's not making you cringe with 'artisanal' mispronunciations, the biggest downside of her narration are her attempts at accents and characterisations, there are pretty awful but I really love the effort she puts into certain scenes, the plastic surgeons dream for instance (I don't want to post any spoilers so I'm being deliberately vague) , Helen could be an awesome narrator, we just need to give her more time to perfect her art.

AMAZING STORY!!!!
I'm so hooked on this series! The narration has been truly amazing. The ending pushes me right into the next book. I can't even look at another book until I've finished this series. Andy Maslen has a way of grasping your full attention throughout the book. Excellent story telling and my hat is off to Helen Moore for being a gifted narrator.
I highly recommend this series but start with Book 1 first!
