Summary

When was the last time someone around you brought up World War Two?

It’s a pretty popular war. Maybe you heard about it yesterday. Maybe last month. But it was probably recent. And when it came up, did you wish that you could be the one to casually drop a fact that would have everyone in the room going, “Wow, I never knew that!”

With this audiobook, you can be that person.

You can listen to it just a few minutes a day.

Chapters are bite-sized and easy-to-read, meant for normal people instead of war historians!

Each chapter ends with a bonus helping of trivia and some quick questions to test your knowledge.

You’ll zoom through this book and be hungry for more.

Get ready to impress your friends with your knowledge–not just of the main events of World War Two, but of all the gritty details and weird true facts. By the time you finish this book, you’ll have a fact for every occasion, from the first moment someone thought about having a Second World War, to the most recent blockbuster movies about it.

So get ready to meet characters from Adolf Hitler, rejected art student, to Jack Churchill, the broadsword-swinging male model. Find out why World War Two started in the first place, and why it’s never a good idea to invade Russia in winter. Learn why the United States was going to stay out of the war, how Canadians stole airplanes for the British, and what an orange soft drink has to do with the Nazis.

Some of the things you’re going to learn are sad. Some are scary. Some are sexy. And some are downright strange! It’s everything your history teacher never got around to telling you.

Cohesive

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a really good trivia book concerning the Second World War. There were quite a few little known details that were really interesting. This is well researched and well organised, and I love the way that O’Neill sets out the book with a feeling of cohesion. I also love the questions at the end of each chapter, which meant I could check my knowledge and refresh easily.

Coincidentally, I saw The Darkest Hour in the cinemas a few weeks ago, and there was a tidbit in there that I was a bit leery off, but it was repeated in this trivia book.

Why shouldn't you invade Russia?

A short, clearly written book about World War Two ( or as we Brits prefer to call it, The Second World War) which, despite it's name is far from trivial.
Having been born in England in the latter part of this war, I grew up surrounded by memories of it, films and books. As I grew older I read extensively, too - I had always been a bit of an history buff. The title of this book intrigued me so I was delighted when I received, at my request, a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom.

Separated into six bite-sized portions, the book firstly outlines the events leading to the war, going back to thinking even before World War One. This is followed by sections on Britain and France at War, the U.S. and Soviet Union at War, Germany and Japan at war, the End of War and, finally, the Fallout from WW2, which includes a brief look at how society itself was affected as well as media spin offs - like the hugely successful recent film, Dunkirk.
Each section is informative, covering basic historical information followed by bullet points which tend to be more personalised, like the Brit., formerly a minor movie actor, who went into battle with his bow and arrow - and shot enemy soldiers with it!
And finally, a short question and answer quiz based on the previous chapter.

The authors have achieved the near impossible: to produce a concise but cohesive overview of a vast topic whilst remaining unbiased and, above all, interesting. It is complete in itself or would provide a jumping off point for anyone wishing to delve deeper. It even has it's funny moments. What an excellent school history resource this could be, too.
Of course, the whole could have been severely flawed by an unsympathetic narrator, but Derek Newman was, instead, excellent, his warm, clear voice perfectly paced, never over dramatic always reading with good intonation. A perfect partnership of narrator and book.

This short book is surprisingly large in content and, also surprising, fun to read. Very highly recommended for everyone (and I do mean everyone!).
I personally will also be looking out for further war trivial books these authors might produce in the future.

Another entertaining and educational listen.

This is my follow up book to The American Civil War Trivia book by Bill O’Neill and Dwayne Walker and yet again as with the first I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was also excellently narrated by Derek Newman.

It is a well structured read, delivering a comprehensive yet succinct over view of the whole conflict and its impact once it was concluded.

The Bitesize chapters are once again perfect in size and the book covers the lead up to the war including Japan’s invasion of China in the 1930s.
It goes into the potential reasons why the war began, how the fallout from WW1 was a catalyst, the parts that Britain and France took, the involvement of the Soviet Union and America and the roles of Japan and Germany too.
There are several significant battles mentioned as well as some interesting individual characters one being Jack Churchill an eccentric British Officer.
They include the significance of the Atomic bombs dropped on Japan on both its population and how it lead to their actual surrender.
The final chapter discusses the impact on all after the war concluded and how modern Europe and the World evolved including the Cold War between the newly emerging Super Powers.
It concludes by highlighting the literature that has come from the campaign and the numerous movies and documentaries that have been inspired as a result.

At the end of each chapter there are numerous bullet point facts which are extremely interesting and the short quizzes are a fabulous knowledge check, so make sure you pay attention and enjoy.

I’m now looking forward to listening to the next book in this series, The Vietnam War Trivia Book.📚
