In a dramatic tale of espionage and conspiracy in World War II, Shadow Warriors of World War II unveils the history of the courageous women who volunteered to work behind enemy lines. Sent into Nazi-occupied Europe by the United States' Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and Britain's Special Operations Executive (SOE), these women helped establish a web of resistance groups across the continent. Their extraordinary heroism, initiative, and resourcefulness contributed to the Allied breakout of the Normandy beachheads and even infiltrated Nazi Germany at the height of the war, into the very heart of Hitler's citadel - Berlin. Young and daring, the female agents accepted that they could be captured, tortured, or killed, but others were always readied to take their place. So effective did the female agents become in their efforts, the Germans placed a price of a million francs on the heads of operatives who were successfully disrupting their troops.

Stilted presentation, with phonetic pronunciation
French words must have been phonetically
written, as if for a child. Very clear voice and presentation, would be good for someone without English as a first language, but lacks some complexity and depth for native English speakers. I'd rather have read the book than listened to this. Pity.

History with women out back in it
An astonishing story of the SOE, an often unfairly maligned key element of the allied war effort, whose effects upon the enemy can probably never truly be calculated accurately but no doubt were significant. Not exclusively about the women agents but this is the main focus, the acts of bravery come thick and fast from what was a truly effective but nevertheless expendable force. The consequences and unintended consequences grow in significance with every new account of analysis. If you are British you might find the reading style irritating, particularly how specific elements such as the date are read (presuming this is for the US and/or non English speaking markets) - and why must Audible narrators do impressions - nevertheless, this book it’s so well-written and researched it’s worth your effort, as you will read in winder the many astonishing acts of bravery and effectives ops against an enemy (leader and soldier alike) that would go to the most ghastly of extremes. May the women of the SOE be forever remembered and appreciated. Stuart

An excellent story well told
I first learned about the SOE and the OSS from my mother who was a WAAF policewoman in WW2 and have read quite a few books on the subject. This book adds a lot more to my knowledge.

Fascinating and poignant history
Incredible work on those that we forget the most and honour the least. Without these folk I very much doubt I would be here today. Incredible, read this after listening to The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, another good work but more focused on the men involved.
