Summary
The acclaimed best-selling classic of Holocaust literature, winner of the Booker Prize and the inspiration for the classic film Schindler's List.
In the shadow of Auschwitz, a flamboyant German industrialist grew into a living legend to the Jews of Cracow. He was a womaniser, a heavy drinker and a bon viveur, but to them he became a saviour. A stunning novel based on the extraordinary true story of German war profiteer and factory director Oskar Schindler, who came to save more Jews from the gas chambers than any other single person during World War II.
In this milestone of Holocaust literature, Thomas Keneally, author of Daughter of Mars, uses the actual testimony of the Schindlerjuden - Schindler’s Jews - to brilliantly portray the courage and cunning of a good man in the midst of unspeakable evil.

Michael
A moving indictment of the depth of depravity that some members of the human race are capable but also testimony to the bravery and kindness of an individual.

very poor narration
I tried and tried but gave up half-way through. I could only understand four out of five words and it eventually became hard work trying to piece the words together to make sense. I also found the lists of names, giving necessary authenticity, slowed down the novel.
It is understandable that the novel achieved high acclaim and serves to remind us of a particularly brutal and barbaric time in recent history. Personally, whilst listening, I found some consolation for all the suffering by the thought that Israel was founded by the end of that decade but I stray into politics.
Schindler is a an amazing character and I will probably return to this book to see what happens.

If you listen to only one book , make it this one.
This book has the power of truth to make you experience an array of human emotions. It will bring deep sadness, but also surprising joy. A brilliant book beautifully narrated, covering a unique and brave,if flawed, man and his humanitarian response to a very dark period in human history.

Engaging and insightful
Gripping story - well-researched and written. Helps bring home the tragedies of the Nazi regime by sharing lots of individuals' personal experiences of loss, abuse, grief and violence but also of love, perseverance, and incredible ingenuity and bravery.

Gripping story...and great narration
This is a most moving story, not spoiled by having seen the film in the 90’s; and I’d wonder about the experience of the reader who encountered the material for the first time. Oskar Schindler, speculator and saviour is an undeniable hero who rescues Jews from the Nazi machine at great personal risk, though also carries some ambiguity as a profiteer.
Although the dialogue is partly fictionalised, it’s crucial to the flow of this true historical account, and is gripping and compelling.
I really enjoyed the novelty of an Australian narrator, appropriate in view of the author and his excellent pronunciation of Polish, Hebrew and German really contributed to the authenticity.

Lest we forget
This was a tough listen not just because of the story but the amount of detail. This is be expected though as it is not a novel but a highly factual account of a very dark time in history. I feel it is a book that needs to be heard/read by all. 'lest we forget'

Humanity at its very worst & best, gripping
So much more than the film could ever portray, the twists and turns of the characters to survive are compelling and absolutely must.
