Summary

Mit dem Namen Preußen verbinden sich gegensätzliche Assoziationen und eine Reihe von Klischees, so etwa Graf Mirabeaus Ausspruch: "Andere Staaten haben eine Armee; in Preußen hat die Armee einen Staat." Für Golo Mann jedoch wurde es Preußens Funktion, "seine unvorhersagbare, ungewollt, vom Eigensinn der Geschichte ihm zugespielte Chance und Aufgabe, der deutschen Nation ihre moderne Form zu geben". Während aus Bayern und Würtembergern Deutsche wurden, wurde aus einem Volk von Bauern gleichzeitig ein Volk von Arbeitern und Angestellten. Deshalb stehen in Golo Manns Überblick über die deutsche Geschichte zwischen 1861 bis 1888 neben den politischen und militärischen Umwälzungen auch die gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Veränderungen im Mittelpunkt. Und natürlich ein Mann, der in dieser Zeit, und in der "modernen deutschen Geschichte" überhaupt, eine "unvergleichliche Rolle" gespielt hat: Bismarck.
