A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE DIRECTED BY MARTIN SCORSESE STARRING LEONARDO DICAPRIO

From the bestselling author of The Lost City of Z, now a major film starring Charlie Hunnam, Sienna Miller and Robert Pattison, comes a true-life murder story which became one of the FBI’s first major homicide investigations.

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions and sent their children to study in Europe.

Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. As the death toll climbed, the FBI took up the case. But the bureau badly bungled the investigation. In desperation, its young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to unravel the mystery. Together with the Osage he and his undercover team began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

A Truly Horrible History

It took me a while to follow this at first, but as the story unfolds, and it's place in history becomes real I was gripped. Like all good thrillers this has an unexpected twist at the end, but this was real life. A tragedy we should know more about. Fascinating!

Incredible and terrifying story.

Loved learning this history. Narration was ok, a bit slow. But I thoroughly recommend this book.

incredible story

quite an incredible and sad story. the writer clearly did his research and that makes the book interesting especially in its third and final part. however, in my opinion the story could have been told and written better. it is a matter of taste, but it is written as a journalistic account more than as a novel. also the part on the FBI and the birth of the FBI are not really relevant to the story and not really interesting either.

Who Knew !!

Saw this title on an Audible daily deal so gave it a try and am I glad I did. Murder, greed, deceit and corruption, this has it all and more, and of course the shock that it's all true. A little known piece of history brilliantly brought to life in this masterfully researched and narrated tale. Recommended

Wow

Compelling story gripped from beginning to end what wonderful storytelling. If there’s one book and one book only, you hear this year, make it this one.

Fascinating story that needs to be heard.

A sad part of history I'd never heard before and also a fascinating glimpse into that transitional period in America when the wild frontier merged not so gracefully with the modern world and "progress".

Hard to follow in Audible format

3 different narrators with 3 different views on what performance to give to the book, I missed so much just trying to get my head around tonal changes. I get the aesthetic of 3 voices for 3 parts of the story, but from whispering sexuality to texan farmhand was too much.

The story is shocking but read the book of you want to get that impact

Absolutely fascinating

Possibly the best audiobook I've listened to (out of maybe 50). Truly fascinating account of this true case including an amazing level of detail and some tense action.

Three narrators tell a different portion of the story. All three are excellently suited to their part.

A quick Google image search will show historic photos of many of the people involved (be careful not to read any text to avoid spoilers!)

A must listen if you're interested in true crime.
