Summary
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.
Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains. The book recounts a harrowing adventure, but ultimately it is the nobility of these men and their indefatigable will that shines through.

A suspenseful and sensitive account.
It is utterly amazing to me, someone used entirely to creature comforts and the modern world, that these men were even willing to set out on their expedition. What they had to endure in order to survive and the decisions they had to make seem unimaginable as I sit here on my sofa listening.
Endurance is a very well written account of these men's adventures. Filled with suspense and pace I listened to the whole 10 hour book in just two sittings and was riveted throughout.
The narrator, Simon Prebble, is perfect! I would definitely listen to another book narrated by him.

Utterly gripping
What did you like best about this story?
One of the best books I have ever read, I don't think I've ever been so emotionally invested in a book. The narration is so well paced and exciting, incredible detail but not overloaded so as to remove you from the story. A brilliant account of a truly spectacular journey.
What does Simon Prebble bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Brilliantly read, perfect voice for this book. His voices give the men real character but are not overdone. He builds tension perfectly and speaks at a good pace.

Incredible!
This is the most amazing audio book I have ever listened to. I have been an audible member for over ten years and have listened to at least one audio book a month since then. It is a true story of how a group of explorers overcame impossible odds. This story is more inspiring than any motivational book or seminar I have ever read or attended. If you are facing impossible trials in your life, listen to this and you will be inspired to face any adversity no matter how big or painful. Endurance, persistence, perseverance, courage, faith are all words that don’t even come close to describing their story.

Compulsory listening for marathon training
This audiobook has been my companion on long runs for the last month as I train for a marathon. In addition to being a cracking story, narrated excellently, it will reframe any notion of suffering you may think you are experiencing. At 10k the men were setting out full of optimism. At half marathon distance, they were grimly facing the possibility of having to eat raw sledge dog meat. 30k run due this weekend so I'm expecting something proportionately dreadful. Fascinating listening, I was familiar with the story before but the depth of detail and real compassion for the plight of the men is truly superb.
